BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Valley City State track and field teams won three individual conference titles, set one school record and racked up 11 All-Conference honors Sunday during the NSAA Indoor Track and Field Conference Championships.
VCSU sophomore
Jaiden Peraza won a pair of conference titles in the men's high jump and long jump, and Viking sophomore
Cameron Champagnie took home the title in the men's triple jump during the conference meet in Brookings, S.D.
Jasmine Barnes set a new school record in the women's 5000 meters, clocking a time of 18:54.59.
"The team came together and had an outstanding time today," said VCSU head coach
Laquone Robinson. "The outcomes from today demonstrated that, and many athletes stepped up. I'm eager to find out what lies ahead for them."

As a team, the Viking men scored 80 total points and finished third out of six teams. The Viking women scored 78 team points and placed fourth out of six teams. Peraza was named the men's Field MVP of the Meet after racking up 28 points in the jumping events. Along with his two titles, he also placed second in the triple jump for a trio of All-Conference honors.
The Top 3 finishers in each individual event earned All-Conference and the Top 8 scored team points. The top two relay teams in each event were named All-Conference.
The Viking men had six All-Conference finishes, all of which came in the jumping events.
Valley City State's men swept the Top 3 spots in the long jump. Peraza picked up the individual title and was followed by
Cameron Champagnie in second place and
Aaron Cutshall in third. In triple jump, Champagnie won the title and Peraza placed second. In the high jump, Peraza won the individual title.
VCSU's women tallied five All-Conference finishes.
Jasmine Barnes placed second in the 5,000 meters with her school-record time and third in the 3,000 meters.
Karly Just took home a third-place finish in the 5,000 meters. Freshman
Emma Muggli had a pair of All-Conference finishes, taking third in both the pentathlon and triple jump.
"We did a great job representing VCSU and that is all I could have wished for," said Robinson. "Seeing how much fun they were having watching each other perform was wonderful."
During awards after the meet, VCSU's
Lily Baldwin and
Jagger Dickman were named NSAA Champions of Character as student-athletes who best represent the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character program.
Up next: Peraza has qualified to compete at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in both the long jump and high jump. The national meet is Feb. 29 – March 2 in Brookings. The rest of the team will shift focus to the outdoor season which begins in late March.
