Champagnie, Peraza win events at Cobber Open

MOORHEAD, MINN. – Cameron Champagnie and Jaiden Peraza both won individual events and the Valley City State track and field teams produced seven Top 2 finishes Saturday at the Cobber Indoor Open.
 
Competing for the first time in over a month, the Vikings turned in a strong performance at the meet hosted by Concordia College in Moorhead.
 
Champagnie – a freshman from Colorado Springs, Colo. – leaped to a collegiate-best mark in the triple jump, recording a top distance of 13.80 meters (45 feet, 3.5 inches) to win the men's competition. That is also the top jump in the North Star Athletic Association so far this season. Teammate Aaron Cutshall went for 13.07 meters in the triple jump to place second on Saturday.
 
Peraza won the men's high jump competition as he cleared 1.97 meters for his second high jump victory of the season. Brackin Awender and Clay Kummer both added second-place finishes for the Viking men. Kummer took second in the 60 hurdles in a time of 9.07 seconds. Awender placed second in the 800 meters, crossing the line in 2:12.97.
 
On the women's side, distance runners Jasmine Barnes and Karly Just both took second place in their events. Barnes finished the women's mile run in 5:44.22, taking second in a field of eight runners. Just race a career-best time in the 3,000 meters, placing second with her time of 11:27.13.
 
The Viking throwers had strong performances Saturday with several PR's and a combined 12 Top 8 finishes in the men's and women's shot put and weight throw.
 
Jacob Berg set a new PR in the men's shot put, placing fifth with his career-best throw of 12.17 meters (39-11.25). Cody Frounfelter was fifth in the weight throw after his top throw of 12.69 meters. Sadie Hansen was fourth in women's shot put with a mark of 11.89 meters, and Jade Azure was fourth in women's weight throw at 13.10 meters.
 
NSAA UPDATE
Valley City State now holds the top three triple jump marks in the conference this season in both the men's and women's triple jump. Champagnie leads the way on the men's side with his mark of 13.80 meters, followed by Jaiden Peraza (13.46m) and Aaron Cutshall (13.39m). Emma Muggli leads the women's triple jump with a mark of 10.10 meters and is followed by teammates Morgan Haerer (9.95m) and Joran Jundt (9.48m).
 
Barnes and Just both now rank fourth in the conference in their respective events after their second-place finishes in the mile run (Barnes) and 3000 meters (Just).

Up next: Valley City State is back in action Jan. 26-27 at the UND Indoor Open in Grand Forks, N.D.
