Vikings beat William Penn, fall to Benedictine in Arizona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUCSON, ARIZ. – Valley City State split the two games played on Arizona on Monday. The Vikings defeated William Penn 7-2, then dropped a one run decision, 12-11, to Benedictine in College Softball in Tucson.
VCSU is 9-9 on the season. William Penn is 9-9, Benedictine is 12-10.

GAME 1: Valley City State 7, William Penn 2
Valley City State scored three runs in each of the first two innings and Maddy Hazelton had a strong outing in the circle as the Vikings downed William Penn 7-2.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Reagan Mieras hit a grounder to short, Marin Frazee flip to second to try and get Ahleeya Nicola was late, Mieras reached on the single and the Vikings led 1-0. Bailey Leroux then doubled to center, Kennadi Stone and Nicola scored to make it 3-0 Vikings.

In the bottom of the second, again the Vikings had bases loaded with one out. Stone reached on an error by shortstop Frazee. Pascale Kihn scored and the bases remained loaded. Nicola walked, scoring Madden Bogenreif, who had singled. With the bases still loaded, Mieras walks, scoring Jenna Decker to make it 6-0 Vikings.

William Penn scored in the top of the third when McKenna Vasser came in on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the fourth, Stone led off with a solo home run to left, making it 7-1 VCSU.

William Penn scored their final run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.

Kennadi Stone was 2 for 3 for VCSU with two runs scored, a home run and two RBI. Bailey Leroux was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a double. Reagan Mieras was 1 for 2 with two RBI, Madden Bogenreif was 1 for 3 with two runs scored. Olivia Kalbus was 1 for 3, and Jenna Decker was 1 for 4 with a run scored. Pascale Kihn and Ahleeya Nicola each scored a run.

Maddy Hazelton pitched seven innings, allowed six hits, two runs, one earned with a walk and two strikeouts.

GAME 2: Benedictine 12, Valley City State 11
Both teams had big innings in this back-and-forth game. The Redhawks got on the board fist with two runs in the bottom of the second.

Chloe Wright scored on the front end of a double steal to make it 1-0 Hawks. With the bases loaded, Shayla Young was hit by a pitch to bring in another run to make it 2-0.

The Vikings scored on an RBI single by Jenna Decker in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, Benedictine scored on a bases loaded hit batter and a passed ball to make it 4-1.

In the top of the fourth, the Vikings got a run on a double by Bailey Leroux to make it 4-2 Redhawks.

An RBI single by Madden Bogenreif scored Anna Kowalyk to make it 4-3 Hawks. Avery Kuklinski came in on an error to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth.

The Red Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Young to make it 5-4 Benedictine.

In the top of the sixth, and a runner on second, Katelyn MacNeill doubled in pinch runner Ashlyn Schumacher to tie the game at 5-5. On the play, MacNeill went to third, then scored on an error by the Red Hawks first baseman to make it 6-5.

The Red Hawks scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead at 12-6.

Valley City State scored five runs in the top of the first to make things interesting. Schumacher had an RBI single to make it 12-7 Red Hawks. Anna Kowalyk walked with the bases loaded to make it 12-8. Two runs came in on an error to make it 12-10. Bogenreif singled ion Kowalyk to make it 12-11. Avery Kuklinski was thrown out trying to score. Then Jenna Decker was caught trying to steal third to end the game.

Anna Kowalyk three hits to lead the Vikings. Shoe scored three times and drove in a run. Jenna Decker, Madden Bogenreif, Kennadi Stone, Bailey Leroux, and Katelyn MacNeill all had two hits each. Bogenreif had two RBI, Decker, Mieras, Leroux, Schumacher, and MacNeill all had one RBI.

UP NEXT: Valley City State has Tuesday off. They will be back in action on Wednesday with a pair of games. They play #19 Midland University at 11:00 am and Westcliff University at 1:00 pm.
