DICKINSON, N.D. – Valley City State needed a win over Carroll College to remain in the Frontier Conference softball tournament. Thanks to
Grace Folkema and
Kylee Banerd, the Vikings defeated the Saints 10-2 in six innings after losing 3-2 to Providence earlier in the day.
Valley City State is now 27-25 overall. Providence is 29-22 and Carroll College is 19-20.
GAME 1: Providence 3, Valley City State 2
The Argos scored two runs in the third to break a scoreless tie on the way to the 3-2 win. Aleana Aionaaka scored on a wild pitch, then Erin Bishop doubled in Kassidy Yeoman.
Erin Bishop's sacrifice fly in the fifth brought in Aionaaka to make it 3-0. In the seventh, the Vikings scored a run on an error then
Madden Bogenreif singled in another run to make it 3-2. The Vikings had the tying run at third when the game ended.
Bogenreif was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Katelyn MacNeill was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Kyle Banerd and
Avery Kuklinski both had an RBI.
Maddy Hazelton pitch well in the loss. She went six innings, allowed seven hits, three earned runs with a walk and six strikeouts.
GAME 2: Valley City 10, Carroll College 2 F/6
In the elimination game, Valley City State scored four runs in the bottom of the third to break open the game.
In the bottom of the second inning,
Jenna Decker's double scored
Kylee Banerd to make it 1-0 Vikings.
In the third,
Kennadi Stone drew a bases loaded walk, scoring
Pascale Kihn to make it 2-0 Vikings.

Avery Kuklinski,
Madden Bogenreif was thrown out trying to score to make it a 4-0. Decker singled in stone and
Anna Kowalyk reached on a fielder's choice bringing in Banerd to make it 5-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bogenreif had a two-run single to make it 7-0. Banerd doubled in Bogenreif to make it 8-0.
A two-run single by Brooke Thompson got the Saints on the board in the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Anna Kowalyk had a sacrifice fly to score
Halle Gullett. The
Ahleeya Nicola singled in Banerd to make it 10-2 and end the game.
Kylee Banerd led the 13-hit attack by going 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Ahleeya Nicola was 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Pascale Kihn was 3 for 3 with two runs scored.
Jenna Decker was 2 for 2 with two RBI.
Avery Kuklinski was 1 for 3 with two runs scored while
Madden Bogenreif was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Kennadi Stone scored,
Halle Gullett scored, and
Anna Kowalyk was 0 for 2 but had two RBI.
Grace Folkema pitched 4 2/3 innings. She allowed two hits, two earned runs, with five walks and five strikeouts to earn the win.
Cooper Klaahsen allowed just one hit in 1 1/3 innings.
