Barrera sets school mark, Vikings compete at UND Open

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Frida Barrera re-set the school mark in the 800 Meters on Saturday as the Viking Track and Field team competed in the UND Open and Multi Meet held at the Fritz Pollard Athletic Center on the campus of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

The Freshman from Clara City, Minnesota crossed the finish line in a time of 2:20.53. That broke the school record, which she set in December at the NDSU Alumni Classic, by 1.30 seconds.

Several athletes delivered standout performances, highlighted by major personal records across multiple events. Mason Brehmer led the way in the mile, running a lifetime best of 4:37.43, a significant improvement over his previous PR of 4:42.57. His strong showing set the tone for an impressive day on the track.

Isaac Eichhorst also turned in a huge breakthrough in the mile, dropping more than 15 seconds from his previous best. Eichhorst clocked 4:57.25, bettering his former PR of 5:12.66 in a major step forward.

Speed was on display in the 400-meter dash as Jonica Taylor and Peyton Sauter both recorded personal records, continuing their upward momentum in the sprint events.

Freshman Brock Norton put together an excellent day as well, recording personal bests in both the 400 and 200 meters, showing promising versatility and competitiveness early in his collegiate career.

In the distance events, freshmen Kole Albers and Paiton Flick competed in the 3000 meters for the first time in their collegiate careers. Both turned in respectable performances and showed strong potential, pointing to a bright future in the event.

Rounding out the performances, Billie Maye had a strong all-around day, running personal bests in the mile and the 100K, improving on times she had set just the previous weekend.

Coach Laquone Robinson had this to say about the meet. "Overall, the meet was marked by confidence, growth, and a series of personal bests that reflect the team's continued progress."

UP NEXT: The Vikings have two meets remaining before the Frontier Conference Indoor Championships take place In Brookings, South Dakota February 20th and 21st. Next weekend, VCSU will be in Fargo for the Bison Open.
