Box Score 2 TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Valley City State softball team split its Saturday games to open play at the Tucson Invitational Games.
The Vikings came from behind with a big seventh inning for an 8-3 win over the University of Puget Sound. VCSU then fell 7-1 to (RV) Arizona Christian University.
VCSU is now 6-7 on the season. The Vikings continue play in Tucson on Sunday against (RV) Madonna University at 10 a.m. CT and (RV) University of St. Francis at 12 p.m. CT.
VCSU 8, University of Puget Sound 3
VCSU found a 7-run seventh inning – five of which were scored with two outs – to erase a 3-1 deficit and defeat the University of Puget Sound 8-3.
The Vikings found five hits and drew three walks in the big inning. The Vikings loaded the bases with one out after
Alyssa DePoorter reached on an error,
Logan Gronberg doubled and
Andrea Rodriguez drew a walk.
Kennadi Stone then drew another walk, scoring DePoorter, and
Ashlyn Diemert's sac fly tied the game at 3-3.
From there,
Saige Forseth drove in a pair of runs with a double to right field. After
MacKenzie Rist walked, the two each stole a base to put both in scoring position.
Skylar Spessard and
Maddy Zander each drove in a run to round out scoring in the game.
Crocker and DePoorter each finished with two hits Saturday, and Crocker, Gronberg and Forseth each doubled. Forseth and Spessard each drove in a pair of runs while eight different Vikings scored a run in the game.
Maddy Zander got the win in the circle after pitching a complete game. She allowed just two hits and three runs while walking six and striking out eight.
Nyomi Estrada got the loss for Puget Sound after 7 innings of work. She allowed eight runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out just one. Jessica Moore finished with a double and two RBIs for the Loggers.

Arizona Christian then defeated the Vikings 7-1 after holding the Vikings to just one run and two hits in the second game of the day.
Arizona Christian scored in four different innings, including three runs in the first to build an early lead.
Christina Grubb and Savannah Smith combined for 5 innings without a hit until
Kennadi Stone doubled to score
Andrea Rodriguez, escaping the shutout.
Ashlyn Diemert followed with a single but the Firestorm managed to end the inning without further damage.
Smith got the win for the Firestorm after 5 and 1/3 innings pitched. She walked just one batter and struck out nine. Grubb started in the circle and worked 1 and 2/3 innings while striking out two.
Emily Garcia went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs for the Firestorm while Brenna Henry added two hits and scored a run Saturday.
Joelle Lamontagne got the loss for VCSU after 2 and 1/3 innings pitched. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out two.
Logan Gronberg started in the circle and pitched 4 and 2/3 innings. She allowed six runs – only one earned – on six hits while walking two and striking out two.
