CARRINGTON – The Valley City State golf teams continue to improve tournament scores this fall after several Vikings carded career-bests at the Viking Fall Invite played Monday and Tuesday at the par-72 CrossRoads Golf Course in Carrington.
VCSU's women finished with a 680 at the Viking Invite, its best 36-hole tournament score since at least 2014. Four Vikings posted a career-low opening round, led by
Sydney Carlson's 77. Carlson then improved her career-best with a 76 in the final round to total 153 for the tournament and a third-place finish.
Kathleen Vetter fired an 82 on Monday and followed up with an 87 on Tuesday to finish with a 169 tournament score and place seventh.
Winter Oldrock finished just behind Vetter in eighth place with career-low 84 on Day 1 followed by an 86 on Day 2 to total 170.
Paige Hulm carded a career-best 95 to open the tournament and bested her low score with a 93 in the final round. Hulm finished in 16
th place, and
Sydney Staus finished in 18
th place after carding a 100-94 at the tournament.
The Viking women placed second out of four teams. Dickinson State's Blue team won the tournament with a 651 (330-321). Elle Soydara of Minnesota State won the individual title with a 7-under-par 137 (68-69) at the tournament.
On the men's side, VCSU fielded two teams of four golfers in the tournament. VCSU's Cardinal team carded a tournament-low since the 2019-20 season with a 303 on Monday paced by a career-best 1-over-par 73 from
Wyatt Meisch. The Vikings then followed up with a 309 on Tuesday to card a 612 for the tournament and a fourth place finish out of eight teams.
Meisch rounded out the tournament with an 80 on Tuesday to finish in 13
th place.
Grant Inniger fired a 2-over-par 74 on Day 1 followed up with a season-low 73 on Day 2, good for a fourth place finish. Inniger's 147 is his 36-hole tournament best as a Viking.
Owen Haase carded a pair of career-low 77s and placed 17
th, while
Zach St. Aubin added a pair of personal-best 79s and a 20
th place finish to round out the VCSU Cardinal team.
VCSU's White team placed eighth with a 759 (391-368) team score. VCSU White was led by
Henrik Jacobsen who carded a 181 including a new career-best 88 in Tuesday's round.
Alex Aker and
Parker Heydt each finished with a 190 as Aker carded a pair of personal best 95s while Heydt finished with a 101 and career-low 89.
Connor Clancy rounded out VCSU White with a 198 (102-96).
Dickinson State's Blake Barner fired a 142 (71-71) with seven birdies to win medalist honors. DSU also won the team title after carding a 587 (289-298) in the 36-hole tournament.
