The Viking Track & Field team is set to open the 2023 outdoor season this weekend with a trip to Wayne, Neb.
Â
The Vikings will compete at the Wayne State College Wildcat Classic on Friday and Saturday in Wayne. The hammer throw and javelin throw will be contested Friday while the remainder of events will be on Saturday.
Â
Events on both Friday and Saturday begin at 11 a.m. It is the first outdoor meet of the season for VCSU and temperatures are expected to be in the low 50s in Wayne. Due to snowy conditions in North Dakota, the scheduled meet at University of Mary on April 1 has been canceled. The Vikings are scheduled to send about 10 athletes to the University of South Dakota Meet on April 7-8, and then Dickinson State is scheduled to host a meet April 14. The Vikings hope to compete at 6-7 meets before the NSAA Outdoor Conference Championships, which is set for May 11-12 in Dickinson, N.D.
Â
VCSU was originally planning to compete at Black Hills State University this weekend, but snow and cold temperatures put that meet in jeopardy and the Vikings were able to enter the Wayne State meet instead.
