The Valley City State track and field team faced some of the region's best competition this weekend as they traveled to Fargo for the Bison Indoor Open, hosted by North Dakota State University.
VCSU's Jasmine Barnes won the women's 5000 meters and Jaiden Peraza had a pair of Top 5 finishes at the meet, which featured a dozen teams from around the region.
Barnes finished the 5000 meters in a time of 19:59.14, winning the four-person race by almost 20 seconds. That is also the fastest time in the North Star Athletic Association this season, ranking Barnes first in the conference in the event.
For the Viking men, freshman Jaiden Peraza had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the jumping events. He cleared 2.01 meters in the high jump (6 feet, 7 inches) to place fourth, and also had a career-best leap of 6.56 meters (21 feet, 6.25 inches) to place fourth in the long jump.
In the men's 60 meter hurdles, Viking junior Clay Kummer took seventh place in the finals and ran a career-best time of 8.69 seconds in the preliminary round. That time ranks him fourth this season among NSAA conference athletes.
