Box Score 2 TUCSON, ARIZ. ? The Valley City State softball team split games on their second day at the Tucson Invitational Games. After falling to Northwestern College 14-10 in their first game of the day, the Vikings rallied back in game two with a six-inning shutout of Jarvis Christian College, 11-0.
The Vikings are now 5-11 overall this season. Valley City State continues play in Tucson on Sunday, March 8, at 5:30 p.m. against Simpson University. The Vikings will also face University of Antelope Valley at 7:30 p.m.
Northwestern 14, VCSU 10
Valley City State scored three runs, including a two-run home run from Riley Perryman in the first inning to lead Northwestern early.
The Vikings built upon their lead with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings as they led 7-4 at the end of the fourth.
Trailing late in the game, Northwestern battled back with a nine-run sixth inning to take their first lead of the game 14-7.
Valley City State would not give up in the bottom of the seventh, tallying three runs with two outs but could not get closer as they fell to the Red Raiders 14-10.
Joelle Lamontagne started in the circle for the Vikings and took the loss after pitching a complete game Friday. She gave up 14 runs on 14 hits, walked seven, and struck out two.
Crocker went 5-for-5 including four doubles and two RBIs for the Vikings. Autumn Perry, Joelle Aiello, and Riley Perryman each added two hits, while Perryman and Marissa Hawkins each tallied three RBIs.
Samantha Ubben picked up the win for Northwestern, pitching three innings while giving up three runs, walking two, and striking out two.
Jennifer Boeve led the Red Raiders with three hits and two RBIs Friday. Emily Bosch, Jordyn Kramer, and Emma Schnell each added two hits while Kramer, Lauren Pavich and Bri Giordano each tallied two RBIs.
Valley City State 11, Jarvis Christian 0
In their second game of the day, the Vikings took just six innings to shut out the Bulldogs of Jarvis Christian College.
The Bulldogs walked in the first run of the game to put the Vikings on the board in the top of the second.
Then, in the fourth inning Valley City State added another five runs on the board, including a three-run triple from Sydney Soulis and an RBI triple from Joelle Aiello.
A solo home run from Riley Perryman added another run for the Vikings. In the bottom of the sixth with just one out, the Vikings loaded the bases for Riley Perryman. Perryman then smashed a grand slam to seal the game, 11-0.
Amber Stewart started in the circle and picked up the complete game shutout for the Vikings. She gave up just one hit, walked one, and struck out nine.
Riley Perryman went 4-for-4 with five RBIs. Sierra Crocker and Joelle Aiello each added two hits and an RBI for the Vikings while Sydney Soulis added a hit and two RBIs Friday.
