Viking softball drops pair of games at Minot State Tournament

MINOT, N.D. – The Valley City State softball team dropped both of its games on day one of the Minot State Dome Tournament Saturday.

The Vikings fell to Dickinson State after an eight-run sixth inning put the Blue Hawks past the Vikings, 12-8.

Valley City State also dropped their second game of the day to Minot State, 8-6.

The Vikings fall to 2-8 overall this season. Valley City State wraps up play at the Minot State Dome Tournament on Sunday, facing University of Providence at 7:30 a.m. and Mayville State at 12:30 p.m.

Dickinson State 12, Valley City State 8
Dickinson State took an early lead after scoring three runs in the first inning Saturday. The Vikings got on the board in the third when Keana Harmon drew a walk to score Autumn Perry.

Then in the top of the fifth, Marissa Hawkins hit a two-run home run as the Vikings trailed by just a run at 4-3.

The Vikings found some momentum with two outs as they rallied to score four runs. A double from Sierra Crocker scored Joelle Aiello and Sydney Soulis. Then, Hawkins doubled to score Crocker. Singles from Riley Perryman and Harmon paired to score Hawkins to round out the inning as the Vikings led the Blue Hawks, 7-4.

Dickinson State tallied eight runs on eight hits and two Viking errors in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead 12-7. The Vikings would score one more in the seventh inning but fell short to the Blue Hawks, 12-8.

Joelle Lamontagne pitched a complete game for the Vikings and took the loss Saturday. She gave up six earned runs on 13 hits while walking four and striking out two.

Marissa Hawkins tallied two hits and three RBIs for VCSU. Sierra Crocker added two hits and two RBIs while Keana Harmon drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings Saturday.

Dickinson State tallied six extra-base hits in their victory over the Vikings. Dallis Mitchell went 3-for-4 with one RBI Saturday. Madison Stephens, Kamryn Kuntz, and Emilie Sickler each added two hits for the Blue Hawks.

Dallis Mitchell also picked up the win for Dickinson State after pitching 1.1 innings, giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out one.

Minot State 8, Valley City State 6
The Vikings were on the board in the top of the first, scoring three runs on an RBI single from Riley Perryman and an RBI double from Keana Harmon.

Minot State answered back with four runs to take the advantage 4-3 before the Vikings scored on a Sierra Crocker RBI single to tie it up at 4-4 in the top of the second.

Both teams were held scoreless until the Beavers struck in the bottom of the sixth and scored four runs on four hits. The Vikings would score two runs in the top of the seventh but couldn't get closer as they fell to the Beavers, 8-6.

Riley Perryman went 3-for-3 against the Beavers and drove in one run. Renee Snyder added three hits and an RBI for the Vikings while Keana Harmon added two RBIs. Joelle Aiello added a pair of hits Saturday.

Amber Stewart started in the circle and took the loss for Valley City State, pitching a complete game and giving up five earned runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out four.

Maggie Mercer and Isis Cabral each recorded two hits for the Beavers while Kilee Fehd drove in a pair of runs Saturday.

Minot State's Karlee Coughlin picked up the win for the Beavers, giving up just one run and striking out two.
