Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Valley City State softball team dropped a pair of games at the Presentation College Dome Classic Friday.
The Vikings scored seven runs and forced their first game into extra innings but fell short on the University of Jamestown's 3-run walk-off homer for a final score of 10-7.
Valley City State's second game of the day opened with a 3-run homer to put Dakota Wesleyan on top in the first inning. The Vikings' Sierra Crocker hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth but couldn't get closer as they dropped the game 3-1.
The No. 10 Vikings are now 1-5 overall this season.
UP NEXT: VCSU continues play at the PC Dome Classic on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Vikings face No. 22 Morningside College at 10 a.m. followed by Dakota State University at 2 p.m.
Jamestown 10, VCSU 7
Two Viking runs scored on Autumn Perry's triple to take the lead in the top of the first inning. A wild throw allowed Perry to score and extend the Viking lead to 3-0 in the top of the first. The Jimmies answered in the bottom of the inning to score four runs on three hits to take over the lead.
With the bases loaded in the second, Sierra Crocker was hit by a pitch to score Renee Snyder and tie the game, 4-4.
A two-out RBI single from Joelle Aiello scored Jayme Menard as the Vikings trailed by just a run in the fourth. Madison Gronau's single in the top of the fifth scored Marissa Hawkins to tie it up again at 6-6.
Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings to force the game into extra innings. The Vikings scored Gronau on a two-out RBI single from Crocker in the eighth inning, but the Jimmies answered with a run in the bottom.
The Jimmies finished with a 3-run walk-off home run from Kassi Ward to take the 10-7 win over the Vikings in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Joelle Lamontagne took the loss for the Vikings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits while walking one batter and striking out two. Amber Stewart also pitched for the Vikings and recorded six strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Four Vikings had two hits in the game including Joelle Aiello, Sierra Crocker, Keana Harmon, and Madison Gronau. Autumn Perry added a hit and two RBIs while Crocker also drove in two runs Friday.
DWU 3, VCSU 1
Dakota Wesleyan's Stephanie Gabel hit a 3-run home run with zero outs in the top of the first to command an early lead. The Vikings held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way but couldn't come back from the early deficit, falling to Dakota Wesleyan 3-1.
Sierra Crocker homered to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning to score the Vikings' only run of the game. Keana Harmon had two hits for the Vikings while Crocker, Riley Perryman, Marissa Hawkins, and Autumn Perry each added a hit.
Amber Stewart pitched a complete game for the Vikings, striking out 14, walking three, allowing four hits and just one earned run.
