Vikings defeat Lions in non-conference matchup

ELLENDALE – The Valley City State men's basketball team extended its winning streak to four games on Tuesday when they defeated Trinity Bible College 97-68.

The Vikings hit 13 three-pointers and tallied 13 steals as a team in Tuesday's victory.

Valley City State improves to 4-1 this season. Trinity Bible opens its season 0-1 overall.

The Vikings opened with a 24-2 run over the first seven minutes, capped by a basket by Hunter Sand. The Lions then scored 10 straight points as they looked to gain back on the Vikings. The Vikings led by 26 points at 47-21 on a jumper from Jalen Addison with 1:22 to play. Trinity Bible answered with a bucket of their own, but a basket from Sand scored at the buzzer to hold a 49-23 lead at the half.

Valley City State continued to build on their lead throughout the second half. Leading 60-33, the Vikings took a 14-4 run capped by a three-pointer from Matthew Schlottman to take the largest lead of the game at 74-37 with 12:21 to go. Over the final four minutes, Valley City State finished with a 13-7 run to take the 97-69 victory.

Valley City State shot 50 percent from the field (38-76), 33 percent on three-pointers (13-40), and 73 percent on free throws (8-11). Trinity Bible shot 44 percent from the field (23-52), 42 percent on three-pointers (7-17), and 68 percent from the free throw line (15-22).

Eddie Oyet had another big game for the Vikings as he led the way with 25 points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench. Chris Thompson added 14 points and a pair of steals while Hunter Sand scored 11 points for the Vikings. Kevin Schramm and Joshua Kelly each added nine points, while Kelly also tallied a team-high seven assists Tuesday.

UP NEXT: Valley City State travels to the Waldorf University Invite this weekend for a pair of non-conference games. The Vikings are scheduled to play North Central University on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and then face Baptist Bible College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
