Valley City State's tough luck in five-game matches continued Friday night during NAIA volleyball action in Valley City.
The Vikings lost their seventh five-game match of the season Friday, falling to Morningside College in a non-conference match: 25-22, 13-25, 13-25, 25-21, 12-15.
It was the eighth five-game match of the season for the Vikings as they fell to 1-7 in those matches.
Valley City State drops to 7-15 overall. Morningside College, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improves to 16-9 this season.
After falling behind 8-4 in the final game, VCSU scored three straight points to pull within 8-7. The Mustangs had the answer through with four straight points of their own as they built a 12-7 lead and won 15-12 to clinch the match.
The Vikings played one of their best games of the year to start the match, hitting .478 as they tallied 15 kills in a 25-22 win over the Mustangs. Tied at 21-21 late in the game, VCSU scored four of the last five points, including a pair of aces by libero Jaycee George.
Morningside found its groove in games two and three, taking advantage of numerous VCSU errors to down the Vikings 25-13 and 25-13.
The Vikings regrouped again to put together a solid game four. VCSU had 16 kills and hit .314 as they won 25-21.
Taylor Sharp led the Viking attack with 14 kills in the match. Nicolette Bloomer pounded home eight kills, and both Autumn Johnson and Hailie Wilds added seven kills.
Meagan Schwarzrock and Jaycee George each had three service aces, and George had a team-high 15 digs. Taylor Balkan had 28 assists and seven digs.
VCSU hit .143 has a team and had five blocks. Morningside hit .281 in the match and tallied nine blocks.
Jean Buyert led the Mustang attack with 12 kills. Ashley Vande Stouwe (11) and Morgan Whitehead (10) each reached double-digit kills as well.
