A late rally in game four fell short Tuesday night as the Valley City State University volleyball team dropped a non-conference match against Concordia College-Moorhead.
Trailing 2-1 in the match and 24-21 in game four, the Vikings rallied with four straight points to take a 25-24 lead, threatening to send the match to a fifth game. But VCSU's game point was spoiled by a kill from Concordia's Heather Beaner as the Cobbers rallied to score the final three points and end the match after four.
Valley City State drops to 7-15 overall. Concordia College improves to 12-4.
Concordia won game one 25-20, taking advantage of six service errors by the Vikings. VCSU regrouped and dominated game two with a 25-15 victory. Game three swung the momentum back to Concordia as the Cobbers pulled away late for a 25-20 victory.
Momentum swung both ways in game four as the Vikings opened up a 15-9 lead. Concordia would score the next six points to tie the game at 15-15, but VCSU answered with four straight points for a 19-15 lead. Concordia scored the next four points and nine of the next 11 to take the 24-21 lead ahead of VCSU's late surge that fell short.
VCSU junior Chelzie-Kristina Ulu had 11 kills and three blocks to lead VCSU's attack at the net. Freshmen Autumn Johnson and Clarissa Olson each added eight kills and two blocks, and Jodi Wilde also had eight kills for the Vikings. Steph Miller recorded 35 assists and 11 digs. Both Kanani Auwae and Jaycee George had three service aces, and George led the defense with 16 digs.
VCSU outhit Concordia .126 to .100 in the match. Both teams recorded seven total blocks.
Concordia College was led by nine kills from Emily Friedrich and eight from Lydia Hansen. Jena Klaphake had 18 assists and nine digs.
Up next: Valley City State University has a stretch of downtime and will not take the court again until Oct. 16 for a conference match at Dakota State University.
