Cameron Isreal knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the VCSU men's basketball team was stunned by Isreal's Presentation College Saints on Saturday, 57-54 in Valley City.
Tied at 54-54, the Vikings had the ball with 28 seconds remaining, looking to win or head to overtime. But Isreal had a different idea, picking up a loose ball in front of the Viking bench with four seconds remaining, dribbling across half court and draining a 3 from 25-feet to beat the buzzer and send the Saints' bench into a frenzy.
The loss was the second straight for VCSU and drops the Vikings to 10-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Presentation College improves to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the North Star Athletic Association.
The back-and-forth game featured 12 ties and 16 lead changes.
Jayden Ferguson paced the Vikings with 22 points and six rebounds, finishing 9-for-14 from the field. Mac Kroeplin had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Briton Bussman added 11 points, including a 3 from the left corner that gave the Vikings a 54-52 lead with 48 seconds remaining.
After Bussman's 3, the Saints' Jeremy Comer drew a foul with 28 seconds to go and sank both free throws to tie the game at 54-54, setting up Isreal's heroics. The Saints were a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line.
Comer led the Saints offense with 19 points, including a 9-for-9 night at the free throw line. Isreal added 18 points and Andre Gibson-Starks chipped in eight.
Valley City State shot 45 percent overall (21-47), 25 percent on 3's (4-16) and 53 percent from the free throw line (8-15).
The Saints shot just 38 percent overall (18-52) and 24 percent on 3's (5-21), but their perfect night at the free throw line was enough to help them overcome the shooting woes.
