VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Due to cold weather, snow, and unplayable field conditions, the Vikings four game series with Dakota State has been moved to Monday and Tuesday, April 6
th and 7
th in Madison, South Dakota.
The Vikings will be trying to get back on the winning track in this series. Following a seven-game winning streak, which was the longest winning streak in ten years for the Viking program, VCSU has dropped the last seven games. Five of those losses have been t Bellevue University who moved up in the NAIA baseball poll to number 3.
Valley City State is 14-15 overall and 1-7 in the Frontier Conference. Dakota State is 4-4 in the conference and 12-18 overall. This will be the second meeting of the season between these two teams. They met at the Frontier Conference Round Robin in Sioux Falls, South Dakota back on 21
ST of March. The Trojans scored eight runs in the second inning on the way to a 16-6 win over VCSU. The Vikings were led by
Evan Gonzalez who had a two-run home run in the top of the second to give Valley City State an early 2-0 lead. Nick Senn was 2 for 2. Cameron DeMaria led the Trojans by going 3 for 4 with three runs scored and five RBI. He was a triple shy of the cycle.
Senn is hitting .341 this season and is tied with Gonzalez with a team high four home runs. Senn has driven in 15 runs.
Hunter Logan leads the team with 27 RBI and is hitting .316.
Alexis Velasco is hitting .311 on the season and has team highs in at bats (106), hits with 33, and doubles with 12.
Cody Wielgosh leads the team with 23 runs scored, stolen bases with seven in seven attempts, and 19 walks.
Takao Cookson,
Connor Martin, and
Grady Shipman lead the way on the mound. Of the 29 starts this season, those three have 24 with
Easton Francis picking up the other five. Martin and Cookson each have four wins to lead the team; Shipman has three and he has the only complete game and shutout this season. Martin has a team high 69 strikeouts in 48 innings. Cookson has 45 in 43 innings while Shipman has 29 in 30 innings.
This will be the 68
th meeting between these two former members of the North Startr Athletic Association. Dakota State holds 36-31advantage including the last eight games. The last Viking win came on April 12
th, 2024, with a 3-1 victory at Charlie Brown Field. The last win in Madison for the Vikings was 14-5 win back on April 22
nd, 2022.
Game times on Monday and Tuesday at Flynn Field in Madison will be 1pm both days for game one and 3:30 for game two.
