VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State baseball team returns home Wednesday, April 15, for a Frontier Conference matchup against Mayville State University at Charlie Brown Field.
The Vikings and Comets meet again after VCSU picked up a 12-2 win in their most recent matchup earlier this season on March 13. In that game, the Vikings used a strong offensive performance to pull away early and secure the victory, continuing a competitive stretch in the series between the two programs.
Historically, the matchup has featured a mix of tight contests and momentum swings, with both programs familiar with each other as conference rivals.
VCSU enters Wednesday's game with a 17-19-1 overall record and a .297 team batting average on the season. The Vikings have leaned on a balanced offensive attack, highlighted by Nicholas Senn, Cody Wielgosh, Hunter Logan, and Alexis Velasco, all of whom have provided consistent production in the middle of the lineup. Senn has been one of the team's top run producers, while Wielgosh and Logan have added steady contact and RBI production, and Velasco has contributed both power and run production.
Mayville State comes in at 20-15 overall with a .318 team batting average. The Comets have shown strong offensive production this season, using power and extra-base hits to generate runs in bunches and remain one of the more dangerous lineups in the conference.
On the mound, VCSU will continue to rely on its pitching staff led by Connor Martin and Takao Cookson, both of whom have carried much of the workload this season and provided key strikeout totals in conference play. The Vikings will look for continued consistency from their staff as they try to contain a Mayville lineup capable of big innings.
Both teams will look to secure a key conference win as they continue through the middle of the season.
First pitch for the one nine-inning game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Charlie Brown Field in Valley City.
