Box Score 2 TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Valley City State baseball team suffered a pair of losses on Friday, dropping both ends of a conference doubleheader against Dickinson State.
The Blue Hawks put up 20 total runs, winning by scores of 11-3 and 9-3. VCSU finished the four-game conference series with a 1-3 record after splitting Thursday's doubleheader.
Valley City State is now 4-15 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Dickinson State moves to 11-12 overall and 3-1 in the NSAA.
VCSU's
Jaden Babiuk had a hit in each game, extending his hitting streak to nine consecutive games.
Up next: Valley City State will have Saturday off before facing Carleton College for a single 9-inning game on Sunday in Tucson.
Dickinson State 11, VCSU 3
Dickinson State broke open a tight game with a flurry of runs in the middle innings. Leading 2-0, the Blue Hawks expanded their lead with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Valley City State finished with three runs on five hits, while the Blue Hawks scored their 11 runs on 15 hits. Both teams committed a pair of errors.
Shane Nixon scored two of VCSU's runs and was one of the five different Vikings to collect hits.
Christian Ramirez and
Hunter Magnuson both had a hit and an RBI.
Brooks Brown started on the mound for VCSU and worked 5 1/3 innings. He scattered nine hits, struck out two and gave up six earned runs.
Andrew Gartrell and
Devon Cook both pitched in relief.
Dawson Cortese led the Blue Hawks with a 5-for-5 game at the plate, and Trent Richter earned the win with six innings on the mound.
Dickinson State 9, VCSU 3
The Blue Hawks completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory in game two, scoring in each of their last five at bats.
Valley City State outhit the Blue Hawks, 10-7, but the Vikings were hampered by five defensive errors. Only four of Dickinson's nine runs were earned runs.
The Vikings scored all three of their runs in the top of the seventh inning, getting an RBI double by
Drew Nixon, an RBI groundout by
Jay Greuel and an RBI single from
Ryan Reynolds.
Reynolds led the offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Greuel was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and
Christian Ramirez was 2-for-4.
Riley Resnick started on the mound, working four innings for VCSU. Resnick allowed seven hits and six runs – only four of which were earned. He walked four and struck out three.
Keeton Clark and
Connor Nelson both pitched in relief.
