Vikings softball drops two to Mayville

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Valley City State University softball team fell in a pair of away games at Mayville State University. The Comets took the first game 4-2 and the second 5-3. The Vikings are now 21-22 overall and 11-11 in Frontier Conference games. The Comets are now 13-28 overall and 7-16 in Frontier Conference games.
 
The Vikings fell in game one 4-2. In the top of the first the Vikings managed to put three on the bases with two out but were unable to capitalize leaving three runners on base. In the bottom of the first, MSU loaded the bases in similar fashion. Ryanne Bass then cleared the bases with a grand slam scoring all four runs Mayville would score in the game.
 
Later in the top of the fourth, the Vikings responded scoring two on Madden Bogenreif's ninth home run of the season. Down the stretch the Vikings were unable to plate the game tying run eventually falling 4-2.
 
VCSU's Cooper Klaahsen was credited the loss and is now 7-6 this season. She tallied four strikeouts in four innings. Madden Bogenreif was 1/4 with a 2 RBI home run. Ahleeya Nicola was 2/3 with a run.
 
In game two the Vikings were unable to mount a seventh inning comeback letting Mayville save a 5-3 win. VCSU struck first in the opening inning. Pascale Kihn singled as the leadoff hitter. She later advanced on a wild pitch. Kennadi Stone then doubled earning an RBI and giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Stone then advanced on another wild pitch setting up a sacrifice fly from Bailey Leroux.
 
In the bottom of the second, the Comets got on the board with a Masison Terres solo home run to make it 2-1. MSU later tied the game with a double and a single that brought Mackenzi Fuxa in. They took and grew the lead in the bottom of the sixth to 5-2. The Vikings threatened in the top of the seventh scoring one, while having the game tying runs on base, but were unable to complete the comeback.
 
Grace Folkema pitched 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and was credited the loss. She is now 3-4 on the season. Kennadi Stone was 2/3 with one run and one RBI. Reagan Mieras was 2/4 with an RBI.
