Vikings softball splits doubleheader with BSC

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Valley City State University softball team went 1-1 in a doubleheader against Bismarck State College on Wednesday, April 23. The Vikings took down the Mystics 6-0 in game one and later fell 8-2 in game two.
 
The Vikings are now 22-23 overall and 12-12 in Frontier Conference games. The Mystics are now 15-29 overall and 10-13 in Frontier Conference games.
 
The Vikings took game won in a shutout 6-0 win. After strong defense by both teams in the first and second, the Vikings broke through in the third. The scoring started with a single by Avery Kuklinski. Pascale Kihn reached on an error while Kuklinski advanced to second. Kennadi Stone delivered a single to load the bases. Madden Bogenreif singled driving home the first run. Reagan Mieras sent a sacrifice fly to center where scoring Kihn. Bogenreif was forced into a run down that Stone capitalized on and took home.
 
Valley City State added insurance in the seventh inning with another timely surge at the plate. Kuklinski started the rally with a walk, and Kihn and Stone each reached to load the bases. Bogenreif came through again with an RBI single, and Mieras followed with her second sacrifice fly of the game. Jenna Decker capped the scoring with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0. The Vikings closed out the game in commanding fashion, striking out the side in the final inning to secure the shutout win behind a strong all-around performance.
 
Maddy Hazelton delivered a complete game, shutout and 10 strikeouts in her appearance at the mound. She improves to 10-11 on the season. Madden Bogenreif was 4/4 with two RBIs in game one.
 
The Vikings were overcome by BSC in game two with a score of 8-2. BSC struck first in the bottom of the first. The scored their first on a bases loaded walk along with four more and a grand slam delived by Jordyn Marcoux. The Vikings tallied one run later in the second. Reagan Mieras reached on a single and advanced a pair of VCSU ground outs. She reach home on an error by the catcher to get the Vikings on the board.
 
BSC added to their lead in the bottom of the second scoring on a passed ball and pickoff play to make it 7-1. Later in the sixth Jada Walter tacked on one more with a solo home run. In the top of the seventh VCSU's Kennadi Stone send a double to right that brought in Bailey Leroux bringing the score to 8-2 where the game would end.
 
VCSU was led by Avery Kuklinski going 2/2 at the plate. Mieras was 1/2 with a walk and run. Grace Folkema was credited the loss and is now 3-5 on the season.
