Vikings, Carroll College, split DH and series

HELENA, MONT. – Both Valley City State and Carroll College scored their runs in groups of two or three in game one. The Vikings got the last group, a three-run seventh for a 10-8 win in the opener. Carroll College took game two 2-0.

Valley City State is now 21-20 overall and 11-9 in the Frontier Conference. Carroll College is 11-9 in the conference and 16-14 overall.

GAME 1: Valley City State 10, Carroll College 8
In the opener, both teams scored in the first inning. Valley City scored twice in the top of the first. With two out and the bases loaded, Reagan Mieras hit a ground ball to short, it was misplayed by Madison Walker allowing Pascale Kihn and Kennadi Stone to score, making it 2-0 Vikings.

The Saints would comeback with three runs in the bottom of the first on Brooke Thompson's three-run home run, giving Carroll a d 3-2 lead.

The Vikings would get the lead back in the top of the second inning on Madden Bogenreif's two-run single, scoring Avery Kuklinski and Ahleeya Nicola which made the score 4-3 Vikings.

VCSU added three runs in the top of the fourth to take a four-run lead. Bogenreif hit a two-run home run to make it 6-3. It was her team leading eighth home run of the season. The next batter, Stone, would triple then score when the ball was misplayed by the Saints right fielder making it 7-3 VCSU.

Carroll College got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Jasmine Barela, making it 7-5 Vikings.

The Saints would take the lead back in the bottom of the sixth. Ella Seaman had an RBI single to make it 7-6. Tayelynn Puyleart drove in Seaman with a triple to tie the game at 7-7. Sammie Labrum doubled in Puyleart to give Carroll College an 8-7 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Bogenreif reached on a fielder's choice which brought in Nicola to tie the game at 8-8. The with two out, Katelyn MacNeil singled in Kihn and Bogenreif to give the Vikings 10-8 lead.
Cooper Klaahsen would retire the Saints in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 10-8 win.

Madden Bogenreif led the way at the plate going 3 for 5 with two runs scored, a home run, and five RBI. Pascale Kihn was 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Kennadi Stone was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Ahleeya Nicola was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Reagan Mieras was 1 for 4, Katelyn MacNeil was 1 for 1 with two RBI, Kylee Banerd was 1 for 3, and Avery Kuklinski was 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Cooper Klaashen picked up the win by throwing two innings in relief. She allowed two hits, and one run. She did not walk a batter and struck out two. Klaahsen is now 7-5 on the season.

GAME 2: Carroll College 2, Valley City State 0
Kathryn Emmert held the Vikings to just three hits over her seven innings of work.

At the plate, Sammie Labrum had an RBI fielder's Choice in the third and Madison Walker singled in a run in the fourth to account for all the runs in the game.

Grace Folkema and Cooper Klaahsen combined on a five-hitter. Folkema allowed all five hits and two runs in four innings. She walked two and struck out one. Cooper Klaahsen retired all six batters she faced with one strikeout.

Kennadi Stone, Kylee Banerd, and Jenna Decker each had one hit for the Vikings.

UP NEXT: Valley City State is schedule to play at Mayville State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 21st.  Then return home for the final series of the season when the University of Providence comes to town for four games April 24th and 25th.
