Vikings, Martin blank Mayville State

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – It was all about the Connors. Connor Martin threw seven shutout innings, and Connor Hoyt had three hits, including a home run and three RBI as Valley City State defeated Mayville State 10-0 in seven innings in a Frontier Conference game at Charlie Brown Field.

Valley City State is now 18-19-1 overall and 5-11-1 in the conference. Mayville State falls to 20-16 overall and 7-9 in the Frontier Conference. 

The plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the early lead. Kaden Rozdeba singled to the hole at short, scoring Hunter Logan who led off the inning with a single. Jackson Penner hit into a fielder's choice before Hoyt singled to center field to score Rozdeba to make it 2-0 Vikings. 

Evan Gonzalez led off the bottom of the fourth with his seventh home run of the season to make it 3-0 Vikings.

The Vikings added three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and no one out, Logan singled to right, Alexis Velasco and Cody Wielgosh scored to make it 5-0 VCSU. The next batter, Brady Papineau grounded out, Goya scored to make it 6-0 VCSU.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hoyt hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Vikings an 8-0 lead. It was his first home run of the season. Later in the inning, Papineau singled to right, scoring Cody Wielgosh. When the throw from right field got away from the third baseman, Junker came around to score to make it 10-0 Vikings.

In the top of the seventh, Martin gave up a lead-off single but then got the next three hitters to preserve the shutout and end the game early.

Connor Hoyt was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Logan Hunter was 3 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI. Evan Gonzalez was 1 for 3 with a home run, and an RBI. Brady Papineau was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI. Kaden Rozdeba was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Cody Wielgosh was 1 for 3 with two runs scored. Nick Senn was 1 for 3 and Devin Minney was1 for 1 with a run scored. Alexis Velasco was the only starter who did not have a hit but did score a run.

Connor Martin allowed just five hits in his seven innings of work. He walked one and struck out eight.

UP NEXT: Valley City State and Mayville State are scheduled to meet for a four-game series this weekend. The games will be on Sunday and Monday, April 19th and 20th at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. with the site to be determined.
