VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Nick Senn's three-run homer in the seventh helped Valley City State take opener 5-2. A combined five-hitter by Grady Chapman and Anthony Carresquillo lift the Vikings in game two 11-0 in a Sunday baseball doubleheader at Charlie Brown Field.
Valley City State is now 20-19-1 overall and 7-11-1 in the Frontier Conference. Mayville State falls to 20-18 overall and 7-11 in the conference.
GAME 1: Valley City State 5, Mayville State 2
The opener was a pitcher's duel for most of the game as Valley City State's
Takao Cookson and Mayville State's Garret Lundmark held the other teams at bay throughout the game.
The Vikings scored first in the top of the second inning on
Kaden Rozdeba's RBI double, scoring
Brady Papineau who had walked.
In the fifth, the Vikings added another run when
Alexis Velasco doubled in
Connor Hoyt to make it 2-0.
The Comets tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on Cam Goff's two-run home run off Cookson.
But in the top of the seventh, with two out and runners at first and second, launched an 0-1 pitch high over the batter's eye in straight away center field for a long three-run homer, his seventh of the season, to give the Vikings a 5-2 lead.
Cookson then retired the Comets 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the complete game win. The right-hander allowed three hits over seven innings, and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out ten. He is now 6-3 on the season.
Offensively, Nick Senn was 1 for 3 with the home run and three RBI.
Alexis Velasco was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Cody Wielgosh was 2 for 3.
Kaden Rozdeba was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Brady Papineau was 1 for 2 with a run scored.
GAME 2: Valley City State 11, Mayville State 0
Game two was all Valley City State. The Vikings scored two runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back on the way to the shutout win.
Alexis Velasco got the Vikings on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.
Connor Hoyt was on board when he led off the game with a single. It was his fourth home run of the season, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
VCSU would double that lead in the second when they scored two more runs.
Kaden Rozdeba drove in
Brady Papineau with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Later in the inning, Hoyt drove in Rozdeba on a ground out to make it 4-0 Vikings.
It stayed that way until the sixth when the Vikings added two more runs.
Evan Gonzalez led off the inning with a single. Pinch runner
Diesel Goya stole second, then went to third when the throw got went into center field. Rozdeba then hit a towering home run over the left field fence to make it 6-0. It was the fourth home run of the season for Rozdeba.
VCSU would add three runs in the top of then eighth. Goya led off the inning with a single. He stole second, when the throw from the catcher went into center field, Goya took third. The ball got away from the center fielder which allowed Goya to come around to score and make it 7-0. A single by Devin Minney and a walk to
Connor Hoyt put runners at first and second. With two out, Velasco doubled to left, scoring Minney and Hoyt to make it 9-0 Vikings.
In the top of the ninth, VCSU pushed across two more runs on a sacrifice fly by Goya and an RBI single by Rozdeba to make it 11-0 Vikings.
Kaden Rozdeba was 3 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored, and four RBI.
Alexis Velasco was 2 for 5 with a home run, and four RBI.
Connor Hoyt was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Devin Minney was 3 for 5 with a run scored.
Diesel Goya was 1 for 1 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Evan Gonzalez was 1 for 3.
On the mound,
Grady Shipman and
Anthony Carrasquillo combined to hold the Comets to five hits. Shipman went the first five and-two-thirds innings. He allowed four hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Carrasquillo allowed just one hit over his three and-a-third innings. He walked one and fanned four. Shipman is now 4-2 on the season and Carrasquillo picked up his first save of the season.
