Bismarck sweeps Sunday doubleheader, Vikings split the weekend series

BISMARCK, N.D. – It was a high scoring day in Bismarck as the Valley City State Vikings and Bismarck State Mystics wrapped up their four game weekend series splitting the four games. Sunday, the Mystics won game one 8-7 in walk-off fashion and then took game two 19-15.

Valley City is 17-19-1 overall and 4-11-1 in the Frontier Conference. Bismarck State is 18-17 overall and 6-9 in the conference.

GAME 1: Bismarck State 8, Valley City State 7
The Mystics got on board first on Kaden Wilcox's solo home run in the bottom of the first.

Valley City State countered that with a two-run home run by Evan Gonzalez. It was his sixth home run of the season, giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead.

VCSU scores three more in the top of the third. Alexis Velasco doubled in Hunter Logan who singled to lead off the inning. Cody Wielgosh came in on an error to make it 4-1 then Brady Papineau grounded out to bring across Velasco to make it 5-1 VCSU.

In the bottom of the third, Karsen Haney cleared be bases with a three-run triple to make it 5-4 Vikings after three.

A double by Bryson Mohs brought in the tying run in the bottom of the fourth. They would take the lead on Lucas Vasey's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Kaden Rozdeba led off the top of the sixth with his third home run of the season to tie the game at 6-6. Merik Junker scored on an error later in the inning to give the Vikings a 7-6 lead.

Eric Reiling brought in the tying run with a ground out in the bottom of the sixth. Then in the bottom of the seventh with runners at second and third, Pacey Phillips singled in Chase Hubbel with the winning run.

Evan Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a home run, a doubled, and two RBI. Hunter Logan was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Kaden Rozdeba was 1 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Alexis Velasco and Brady Papineau were both 1 for 4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Nick Senn was 1 for 4 for the Vikings.

GAME 2: Bismarck State 19, Valley City State 12
Bismarck State scored ten runs in the third inning to turn a one-run deficit into a 16-7 lead on the way to a 19-12 win in the second game.

The Mystics scored five runs in the bottom of the first to get the scoring going. Kaden Wilcox, like he did in game one, started the scoring with a home run, but this time it was a three-run homer to make it 3-0. Eric Reiling followed that with a solo home run to make it 4-0. Tate Herrmann singled in a run later in the inning to make it 5-0 Mystics.

The Vikings got one back in the top of the second inning when Brady Papineau hit his first home run of the year to make it 5-1.

Bryson Mohs lead-off home run in the bottom of the second got that run back and made it 6-1 BSC.

Valley City State would take the lead with a six run third inning. With the bass loaded and one out, Alexis Velasco singled in Evan Gonzalez to make it 6-2 BSC. Nick Senn drove in Cody Wielgosh and Connor Hoyt with a single to make it 6-4 BSC. Brady Papineau singled in Velasco to make it 6-5. Gonzalez had a two-run single, scoring Papineau and Senn to make it 7-6 Vikings.

In the decisive bottom of the third, Herrmann tied the game at 7-7 with an RBI single. A bases loaded walk to Pacey Philips gave the Mystics the lead at 8-7. Mohs then connected for his second home run of the game; this one was a grand slam to make to 12-7. All of this before an out was recorded. Then with one out and runners at second and third, Caleb Gimbel hit an RBI single to make it 13-7. Two runs came in on wild pitches, and another came in on an error to make it 16-7 Bismarck State.
An RBI single by Greyson Dockter in the bottom of the fourth made it 17-7.

Valley City State got a run back with an RBI single by Gonzalez to make it 17-8 in the top of the fifth inning.

Mohs continued his big game with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 19-8 Mystics.

The Vikings then began to chip away at the lead. In the top of the sixth, a two-run home run by Cody Wielgosh made it 19-10. A sacrifice fly by Papineau made it 19-11 BSC.

An RBI single by Velasco made it 19-12 in the top of the seventh inning. The Vikings would load the bases but could not push across another run.

In the top of the ninth, with the bases loaded and one out, Hunter Logan scored on a wild pitch, then Papineau grounded out, Velasco scored to make it 19-14. A wild pitch brought Nick Senn in to make it 19-15. But that was as close as the Vikings would get and had to settle for a series split.

Brady Papineau led a 16 hit attack by going 3 for 6 with a home run, two runs scored, and four RBI. Cody Wielgosh was 3 for 6 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Alexis Velasco was 2 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Nick Senn was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and two RBI. Evan Gonzalez was 2 for 4 with a run scored, and three RBI. Hunter Logan was 2 for 5 with three runs scored. Connor Hoyt was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

UP NEXT: The Vikings host Mayville State on Tuesday for one game. First pitch is set for 2pm at Charlie Brown Field. This will be the first home game for the Vikings this spring.
