Vikings take two from Bismarck State as offense explodes

BISMARCK, N.D. – Valley City State scored 31 runs in two games and came away with a doubleheader sweep in the first two games of the four-game series with Bismarck State in Frontier Conference baseball in Bismarck. The Vikings took game one 12-1 and won game two 19-6 in seven innings.

The Vikings are now 17-17-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the Frontier Conference. Bismarck State is 16-17 overall and 4-9 in the Frontier Conference.

GAME 1: Valley City State 12, Bismarck State 1
The Vikings broke open a close game with nine runs in the top of the fifth inning in the 12-1 win.

VCSU scored one in the top of the first when Nick Senn drove on Hunter Logan with a two out RBI double for the early 1-0 lead.

In the second with the bases loaded and two out, Cody Wielgosh walked, bringing in Anthony Madsen who doubled. With the bases still loaded and two out, Cam Pero scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Vikings.

In the decisive fifth, Wielgosh led off the inning with a home run, his third of the season, to make it 4-0. With two out and runners at second and third, Madsen singled, scoring Merik Junker and Alexis Velasco to make it 6-0 VCSU. Diesel Goya had a pinch-hit double to put runners at second and third. Cam Pero hit a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, to make it 9-0 Vikings. Hunter Logan walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Wielgosh's RBI single. Velasco, who singled earlier in the inning, hit his third homer of the season to make it 12-0 Vikings.

The lone run for the Mystics came in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo homer run by Chase Hubbel.

The Vikings had 13 hits, seven for extra bases. Nick Senn was 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI. Anthony Madsen was 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI. Cody Wielgosh was 2 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI. Alexis Velasco was 2 for 5 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Hunter Logan was 1 for 2 with two runs scored, Diesel Goya was 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored, Cam Pero was 1 for 2 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI. Connor Hoyt was 1 for 1.

Connor Martin pitched the first six innings. He allowed one hit; he walked three and struck out nine. Trevan Jaques pitched the seventh and allowed Hubbel's home run.

Game 2: Valley City State 19, Bismarck State 6 F/7
Valley City State wasted very little time in game two with six runs in the top of the first. Alexis Velasco brought in Hunter Logan with a single to start the scoring. Logan walked to lead off the game. Nick Senn then launched a three-run home run. It was Senn's team leading fifth home run of the season to make it 4-0. Two batters later, Kaden Rozdeba homered to make it 5-0. It was home run number two for Rozdeba. With two on and two out, Logan delivered an RBI single, scoring Anthony Madsen to make it 6-0.

The Mystics got a run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Eric Reiling, making the score 6-1 Vikings.

In the top of the second, Velasco would walk to lead off the inning. Senn then followed with his second home run of the game and sixth of the season to make it 8-1 VCSU. Brady Papineau singled, stole second, then scored on Cam Pero's two out single to make it 9-1 Vikings.

In the top of the third, the Vikings added four more runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Wielgosh came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 10-1 VCSU. Brady Papineau hit a little flare to right, the right fielder dove for the ball but could not come up with it. Velasco came in to score on the play to make it 11-1 VCSU. With two out and runners at second and third, Madsen hit a hot shot that went off the third baseman and was played in short left field by the shortstop. On the play, Nick Senn and Papineau scored to make it 13-1.

In the top of the fourth, Valley City State scored four more times. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Senn doubled in Wielgosh and Logan to make it 15-1. Papineau grounded out and Velasco came in to score. Junker, who was running for Senn scored on a wild pitch to make it 17-1 Vikings.

In the home half of the fourth, a bases loaded walk to Tate Mart brought in Eric Reiling to make it 17-2 VCSU.

The Vikings plated two runs in the top of the sixth. With one out and runners at second and third, Evan Gonzalez doubled to the gap in right center field. Devin Minney came in to score to make it 18-2. Jackson Penner grounded out and Gonzalez scored to make it 19-2 VCSU.

In the home half of the sixth, the Mystics got four runs back on a two-run opposite field home run by Caleb Gimbel and a solo shot to center field by Alec Vincent. The back-to-back home runs made it 19-5 Vikings. Jace Groseclose had an RBI single to make it 19-6.

That would be the final as the Mystics went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game due to the run rule.

The Vikings had 17 hits and were led by Cody Wielgosh who was 4 for 6 with three runs scored. Nick Senn was 3 for 3 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and seven RBI. Cam Pero was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Evan Gonzalez was 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI. Hunter Logan, Jackson Penner, Alexis Velasco, Devin Minney were al 1 for 2. Velasco scored four runs and drove in one. Loga scored twice and drove in a run. Penner had an RBI and Minney scored a run. Anthony Madsen was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI. Brady Papineau and Kaden Rozdeba were both 1 for 5. Papineau drove in two runs and scored twice. Rozdeba had a solo home run.

Takao Cookson was the benefactor for all this offense. He went five-plus innings. He allowed eight hits, five runs, four earned. He walked one and struck out six. Derek Pederson went the last two innings and gave up two hits and an earned run.

UP NEXT: The two teams continue their series on Sunday. Game one is at noon with game two set for a 3:00pm first pitch.
