Vikings on the move for Saturday’s game

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State University Vikings will continue to be road warriors for their home games. This Saturday's Frontier Conference doubleheader with Mayville State University will be played at Concordia College in Moorhead at the Cobber Fieldhouse.

The Women will tipoff at 2:00 p.m. and the Men will tipoff at 4:00 p.m.

All passes, including parent, student, faculty, staff, and booster pass, WILL be honored. So have those passes ready to be presented at the gate. There will also be a cash gate as well.

For the Women, this will be the 55th meeting since 2003 in this rivalry. The Vikings have a slight edge in the series winning 28 to the Comets 26. The Vikings have won the last three meetings including a 74-59 win in Mayville in November. The Vikings trailed by as ten points in the first half but used a 29-4 run in the second and third quarters to take control of the game.

Ellie Braaten had 23 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and five assists in the win for VCSU. Abbey Aslesen added twelve points and five rebounds. Liz Lukken and JayCee Richter each had nine points for the Vikings and Aubrey Prunty chipped in eight points and six rebounds.

Ellie Braaten leads the team in scoring with a 12.5 points per game average. She also leads the team in defensive rebounds (73), assists (55), and is second in steals (35). JayCee Richter is averaging 9.6 points per game and a team high 6.5 rebounds per game. Abby Aslesen is averaging 9.1 points per game and has a team high 90 rebounds. Tiyana Schwinghammer is averaging 8.2 points per game and leads the team with 36 steals.
The Vikings come into the game with a 5-12 record and 2-11 in the Frontier Conference. The Comets are 1-16 overall and 0-13 in the Frontier Conference.

This will be the 55th meeting between these two rivals and travel partners since 2003 in Men's basketball. Currently, Mayville State holds a 29-25 advantage. The Comets won the first meeting this season, an 85-82 win back on November 18th. The Vikings trailed by as much as nine points in late in the second half and had a chance tie the game at the buzzer, but Kaleb Larson's long three-pointer bounced off the rim as the horn sounded.
Larson led the Vikings in that game with 18 points and seven rebounds. JR Cison had 17 points. Jaelyn Johnson had eight points and five rebounds. Logan Deal had five points but grabbed a game high 14 rebounds.
The Comets have won the last eight games in this series. The last Viking win came in January 27th, 2023 when they picked up a 102-98 win in Valley City.

Larson is coming off a career high 29-point effort against Bismarck State on Tuesday. Logan Deal also scored a career high 22 points and added 14 rebounds. JR Cison nearly had a triple-double with eleven points, ten assists, and eight rebounds. Maddox Griffin was also in double figures for the Vikings with eleven points.

Cison leads the team in scoring (16.8 ppg), assists (3.0 apg), and steals (15). Larson is next at 15 points per game. Deal is at 9.9 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 boards per contest.
The Vikings are 7-11 overall and 3-10 in the conference. Mayville State is 7-11 overall and 3-10 in the Frontier Conference.
