SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Valley City State University Volleyball fell 3-2 against #7 Northwestern University, Iowa, at the Siouxland Invitational. The Vikings fell 25-20, 21-25,25-18, 17-25, and 9-15. The Vikings fall to 1-3 on the season while Northwestern improves to 2-0.
The Vikings quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first set, taking the fourth point from a
JayCee Richter ace. They later grew their lead to 9-2 before Northwestern called a timeout. The Vikings later closed out the first set 25-20, leading it from start to finish.
Set two went back and forth to start the set with a game including four lead changes and nine ties during the set. Northwestern would take set two 25-21 after earning seven of the last eight points.
In set three, the Vikings once again jumped out to an early lead, starting 3-0, growing the lead to 12-3, earning six points during
Madden Bogenreif's serve. With the commanding lead in the set, the Vikings would close it out with the score of 25-18.
Set four saw the Vikings down 3-0, where they would then go on a 5-0 run, claiming the lead of 5-3. Northwestern stormed back with a 5-0 run of their own, taking back the lead at 8-5. Later down 10-7, Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, growing their lead to 16-7. The Vikings were unable to narrow the deficit, falling 25-17.
The Vikings fell 15-9 in the fifth set, unable to recover after falling behind 7-3 early in the final set.'
The Vikings were led by
Macy Fridgen recording 10 kills on 28 attacks. Fridgen was also credited with three assisted blocks. Viking
Danielle Hagler and
Morgan Freije both tallied eight kills in the five-set match.
Madden Bogenreif led the Vikings with 21 assists while also contributing 11 digs. Just behind her was
Gracie Schumacher with 19 assists. On defense,
JayCee Richter led the team with 24 digs in the contest.
