Baseball goes 1-1 against Dickinson State

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Valley City State University baseball team went 1-1 in a pair of game against Dickinson State University on Friday, April 25. The Vikings took game one of the doubleheader with the score of 2-1 but fell in game two 4-2.
 
VCSU finishes the day with a 20-28 overall record and 4-14 in North Star Athletic Association conference games. DSU is now 16-27 overall and 8-10 in NSAA conference games.
 
VCSU 2, DSU 1
Viking baseball took game one 2-1 scoring a run in the fifth and the seventh to compete the comeback victory. Alexis Velasco was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Porter Jorgenson was 2-for-4 with one run.
 
DSU scored their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the second on a solo home run hit by John Michael Gonzalez Jr. taking a 1-0 lead.
 
Later in the top of the fifth the Vikings responded with a run of their own after Hunter Logan reached on an error allowing Brady Papineau to score tying the game 1-1.
 
The Vikings took the lead in the top of the seventh after Alexis Velasco hit a one RBI sacrifice fly that allowed Porter Jorgenson to score.
 
Viking pitcher Hunter Magnuson pitched an efficient complete game allowing one hit, one run, while throwing five strikeouts. Magnuson only required 86 pitches on the day. He was credited the win moving to 4-5 on the season.
 
DSU's Jacob Scully was credited the loss after a seven-inning performance yielding six hits, two runs, with five strikeouts. He moves to 5-5 on the season.
 
DSU 4, VCSU 2
The Vikings feel 4-2 in game two after yielding a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. VCSU's Alexis Velasco was 2-for-4 with a double and one run. Brady Papineau was 2-for-4.
 
Dickinson was first on the board scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. They tallied one on a ground out to the shortstop and a second on a single to center field to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Vikings later scored in the top of the fifth of a Diesel Goya single that brought home Devon Minney.
 
Later in the sixth the Vikings tied the game after a Jaden Babiuk double that allowed Alexis Velasco to score tying the game at 2-2.
 
DSU quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer by Jadyn Roberts taking a 4-2 lead where the game would later end.
 
VCSU pitcher Connor Martin was credited the loss after pitching six innings allowing six hits, four runs while throwing six strikeouts. Martin moves to 0-6 on the season.
 
DSU's Trent Richter was credited the win after pitching six innings allowing five hits, two run, with three strikeouts. Richter improves to 4-2 on the season. Trent Chavez was credited the save earning his first of the year.
