VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State University baseball team fell in both games against Mayville State University on Friday, April 18.
The Vikings fell 2-0 in game one and 9-8 in game two to the Comets. The Comets move to 13-23 on the season and 5-9 in NSAA conference games. The Vikings fall to 16-27 overall and 1-13 in NSAA conference games.
MSU 2, VCSU 0
The Vikings were defeated 2-0 in game one of the doubleheader after a recording three hits in the contest. VCSU's
Jamel Chabot,
Alexis Velasco, and
Hunter Logan tallied one hit in the game.
Mayville State scored the first run of the game in the top of the third in a bases loaded walk making the score 1-0. Later in the sixth they extended their lead to 2-0 where the game would end.
Viking pitcher
Hunter Magnuson was credited moving to 3-5 on the season. Magnuson pitched six innings tossing 10 strikeouts. He allowed four hits and two runs on the day.
MSU pitcher Garret Lundmark pitched a seven-inning complete game allowing three hits, no runs, and 10 strikeouts. He moves to 4-4 on the season.
MSU 9, VCSU 8
The Vikings came up just short in game two falling 9-8.
Cam Pero was 3-for-4 with one RBI,
Jamel Chabot was 2-for-3 with one RBI as well.
The Vikings got off to a 3-0 lead in the first after a two RBI
Jaden Babiuk double and a one RBI
Cam Pero single.
MSU later climbed back to 3-2 after scoring two runs in the fourth. They score on a sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt.
Also, in the fourth the Vikings grew their lead back to two with a
Kaden Rozdeba sacrifice fly making it 4-2.
Mayville answered in the fifth making it 4-3 on another sacrifice fly.
The Vikings once again edged ahead in the sixth moving to 5-3 from a
Jamel Chabot single.
In the seventh the comets evened up the game at 5-5 on a sac fly and a single.
The Vikings tallied two more in the bottom of the seventh taking and extending the lead to 7-5 with the help of one RBI from
Brady Papineau and
Hunter Logan.
Mayville responded in the eight tying the game 7-7 with two straight home runs.
Kaden Rozdeba flew out giving the Vikings the go ahead run at 8-7 but later fell to a two-run home run from Mayville in the ninth.
Viking Pitcher
Johan Freudenburg was credited the loss from his 1-2/3 inning performance that yielded two runs. He moves to 0-3.
Connor Martin started for the Vikings pitching six innings yielding seven hits, four runs, and nine strikeouts.
MSU Pitcher Jake Hutter was credited the win moving to 1-1 on the season.
