VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Valley City State University baseball took down Mayville State University in a pair of games on Saturday, April 19.
The Vikings took game one 6-2 and game 2 14-12. The are now 18-27 on the season and 3-13 in North Star Athletic Association conference games. Mayville falls to 13-25 on the season and 5-11 in NSAA conference games.
VCSU 6, MSU 2
The Vikings defeated the Comets 6-2 in game one of the doubleheader.
Porter Jorgenson was 1-for-3 with one double, two RBIs, and two runs.
Alexis Velasco was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The Vikings opened the scoring in the bottom of the second taking a 1-0 lead on an error by the second baseman allowing
Cam Pero to score.
Mayville responded in the top of the third with a solo home run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings reestablished the lead scoring on a
Jaden Babiuk single to left field. They tallied one more from an
Alexis Velasco double taking a 3-1 lead.
Later in the sixth MSU got within one on a one RBI single making the game 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth the Vikings took a commanding lead scoring two on a
Porter Jorgenson double.
Jamel Chabot then singled for one more RBI giving the Vikings a 6-2 lead that they would close the game with.
Viking starting pitcher
Takao Cookson threw a seven-inning complete game yielding five hits, two runs and struck out 11. Cookson improves to 3-2 on the season.
MSU's Calvin Watkins was credited with the loss after pitching five innings yielding five hits, three runs with four strikeouts.
VCSU 14, MSU 12
In game two the Vikings took came back from a 9-3 deficit to win 14-12.
Judson Seliskar was 3-for-4 with two doubles, five RBIs, and two runs. Viking
Christian Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple, six RBIs and two runs.
Mayville State jumped on the board early scoring three in the first starting with a two-run homer and grounding into a double play that scored one.
The Vikings managed one in the first from a
Christian Ramirez bases loaded walk making the score 3-1.
In the second MSU scored two more growing their lead to 5-1.
Valley City hammered home two runs from a
Judson Seliskar double in the second making it 5-3.
MSU rallied in the third scoring four. The hit a pair of one RBI singles, and one two RBI single to take a 9-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth the Vikings put together a giant comeback. It started with a bases loaded walk by
Judson Seliskar scoring one.
Alexis Velasco singled scoring two making the score 9-6.
Christian Ramirez cleared the base runners with a three RBI triple tying the game 9-9.
Blake Portalski reached first on a sacrifice bunt that allow Ramirez to score taking a 10-9 lead.
The Comets tied the game on a bases loaded walk in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth
Christian Ramirez sent a two-run homer to left field giving the Vikings at 12-10 lead. In the sixth they scored two more on a
Judson Seliskar single making it 14-10.
Mayville would score two in the seventh but would come up short in their comeback efforts and the Vikings take the 14-12 win.
VCSU's
Harrison Metz was credited with the win moving to 3-0 on the season after pitching two innings allowing one hit and two runs along with two strikeouts.
Grady Shipman was credited with the save after pitching 2-1/3 innings yielding no hits, no runs and four strikeouts.
MSU's Isaac Mata was credited the loss moving to 0-1 on the season after allowing two hits and four runs in one inning.
