VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State University baseball team lost both games in their home opening doubleheader against the University of Jamestown held at Charlie Brown Field in Valley City, N.D.
The Vikings fell 5-4 in game one and 4-1 in game two. The Vikings are now 15-24 and 0-10 in NSAA conference games. The Jimmies improve to 26-10 and 7-3 in NSAA games.
UJ 5, VCSU 4
The Vikings came up short in their comeback efforts making a good push in the bottom of the eighth. VCSU's
Alexis Velasco was 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one RBI.
Brady Papineau was 2-for-3 with one run.
The Jimmies jumped out to an early lead scoring two in the first and three in the second making it 5-0. They scored on a couple of Viking errors, a single, and a sacrifice fly.
VCSU Starting pitcher
Hunter Magnuson pitched a complete game holding the Jimmies scoreless after the second.
On offense, the Vikings got on the board with an
Alexis Velasco home run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 5-1. They later tallied three in the bottom of the sixth from a
Hunter Logan ground out that advanced the loaded bases.
Devon Minney then hit a two RBI single to center field bringing the Vikings within one at 5-4 where the game would end one inning later.
Viking pitcher
Hunter Magnuson went the distance pitching seven innings, yielding six hits, five runs with five strikeouts. Magnuson was credited the loss moving to 3-4 on the season.
Jamestown's Avery Liestman pitched 5-2/3 innings yielding seven hits, four runs with six strikeouts. Liestman was credited the win moving to 6-3 on the season. Ben Bohlmann pitched 1-1/3 inning in relief yielding no hits, not runs and tossing two strikeouts. Bohlmann was credited the save in the contest.
UJ 4, VCSU 1
The Vikings were defeated 4-1 in game two of their doubleheader against the Jimmies.
Jamel Chabot led the Vikings going 2-for-4 in the contest.
Judson Seliskar was 1-for-1 with one RBI as a pinch hitter.
Jamestown scored one in the top of the second on a fielder's choice for out. They later scored one on a single in the third making it 2-0. In the sixth they scored one more on a solo home run by Ryan Muizelaar. Later in the eighth they scored one more on a Viking error making it 4-0.
The Vikings scored one in the bottom of the eighth off a single from
Judson Seliskar that brought in pinch runner
Justin Rogers. The game later ended with the score of 4-1.
Viking pitcher
Connor Martin pitched 7-1/3 innings yielding six hits, four runs with seven strikeouts. Martin was credited the loss moving to 0-5 on the season.
Jamestown's Luke Zimmer was credited the win moving to 5-3 after pitching 7 innings giving up one run and six hits. He pitched 10 strikeouts on the day. Joe Hart pitched in relief for one inning yielding no runs and no hits. He was credited with his third save of the year.
