KANSAS CITY, MO. – The Valley City State University Baseball team went 1-1 on Monday, Feb. 24. The Vikings started the day with a 9-3 victory over Dordt University. Later in the afternoon they fell to Kansas Christian College 11-10.
The Vikings remain .500 on the season with a 4-4 record, after splitting the days games. Dordt fell to 4-6 on the season while Kansas Christian earned their first win of the season improving to 1-4.
VCSU 9, DU 3
Valley City State defeated Dordt University 9-3 in a 11-hit performance. VCSU's
Jamel Chabot went 3-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI, and a walk.
Jaden Babiuk was 3-for-4 with one double, two RBI's, and two runs.
Playing at a neutral site, the Vikings played as the home team on defense in the top of the first inning. Dordt's Jimmy Twombly doubled to left center. Joseph Schlesselman reached first on an error, also advancing Twombly to third. Logan Harris grounded out to second scoring Twombly.
Takao Cookson finished the inning with a strikeout.
To start the game on offense, Viking
Connor Hoyt earned a walk, then stole second.
Jamel Chabot was walked.
Justin Rogers pinch ran for Chabot. During a
Brady Papineau at bat, Hoyt and Rogers advanced on two different wild pitches with Hoyt scoring and Rogers reaching third, making the score 1-1.
The Vikings tallied three runs in the bottom of the second. Babiuk singled to left center followed by a
Daegen Morcom single. With runners on first and second,
Diesel Goya laid down a sac bunt advancing runners to second and third. Hoyt Singled to center scoring Babiuk and Morcom while earning two RBI's. Chabot then doubled to left scoring Hoyt making the score 4-1.
Valley City State continued to grow their lead in the bottom of the third making it 6-1. The Vikings scored one on an
Alexis Velasco home run. Babiuk hit a double, later reaching home on an error.
In the top of the fourth Dordt edged closer making the score 6-3 earning two runs on two hits. In the bottom of the fourth the Chabot doubled and was pinch ran by Rogers. Rogers advanced to third on a sac bunt and Velasco single scoring Rogers earning one RBI.
In the bottom of the sixth the Vikings tallied two more making the score 9-3. With two hit by pitch and one walk the Vikings had the bases loaded where Babiuk would single, driving in two runs for two RBI's. With the final score of 9-3 the Vikings tallied their fourth win of the year.
Cookson pitched from three innings giving up three runs, four hits, while earning three strikeouts.
Anthony Carrasquillo pitched three innings with no hits, no runs, four strikeouts, and a walk. Carrasquillo was credited with the win and is now 2-1 on the season.
KCC 11, VCSU 10
The Vikings fall in the bottom of the seventh inning to KCC with a score of 11-10.
Hunter Logan was 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI's, one walk, and two runs.
Brady Papineau was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run.
In the top of The Vikings scored the first run of the game of a Goya single that scored Payton Jantzi. KCC tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the third KCC took the lead, growing it to 4-1 after three singles and an error.
Kansas Christian rallied in the bottom of the fourth scoring six runs making the score 10-1. The Vikings quickly responded in the top of the fifth scoring six of their own making the score 10-7. The Vikings Chabot scored on a Papineau single. Wielgosh singled scoring Papineau. Logan triples scoring three, later scoring on a passed ball.
The Vikings tied the game up in the top of the seventh with three runs thanks to a pair of walks, a ground ball by Goya, and a double by Chabot. In the bottom of the seventh KCC closed out the game scoring on a single making the score 11-10.
Valley City's
Jay Mendez was credited the lost moving to 0-1 on the season. Parker Bryant was credited the win for KCC.
