VALLEY CITY, N.D. – It has been a good start to the season for the Valley City State Men's basketball teams. Coach
Ryan Montgomery's crew is off to a 4-0 start on the season. Tonight, they travel to Mayville to play the Comets in the Frontier Conference opener. Tip off at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse is set for 7:00 p.m.
The last time out, VCSU came from behind to get by Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, South Dakota 88-84. Freshman
Joel Nelson led the way for the Vikings with a career high 16 points, twelve coming in the second half. He scored the go-ahead basket with 1:19 to go in the second half. He then added two free throws to seal the win with 2.2 seconds to go. Senior
Kaleb Larson had twelve points with half of them coming in a span of 2:29 late in the second half. Senior
JR Cison, who came into the game averaging 25.7 points per game, was held to twelve. Junior
Nez Chehade came off the bench to score eleven points, grab eight rebounds, and hand out three assists.
Cison leads the Vikings with a 22.3 points per game scoring average. Larson is averaging 13 points per game, and
Logan Deal is just under twelve points per game.
Alex Lester leads the team in rebounding with an average of six boards per contest.
The Vikings are looking to stop a seven-game losing streak to the Comets. The last Viking win in the series was a 102-98 win back on January 27
th, 2023. The last win at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse for the Vikings came almost exactly one year before that when they defeated the Comets 79-69 on January 27
th, 2022.
The Comets are 4-1 on the season and are coming off a 80-73 loss to Briar Cliff. It was the first game this season that Mayville State did not score over 100 points.
