JAMESTOWN – VCSU senior Jasmine Barnes broke a 30-year-old school record Friday as she won the 5000 meters at the Al Cassell Classic.
 
Barnes set a new Viking record with her winning time of 18:41.29, which broke the old school record of 18:52 set by Dani Dew back in 1993.
 
Her victory in the 5,000 meters was also one of four individual victories for VCSU on Friday. Kendra Odegard won the women's javelin and Karina Olson won the women's 100-meter hurdles. Jaiden Peraza took first in the men's high jump for VCSU.

The Vikings totaled 20 Top 5 finishes and numerous PRs at the meet, which featured athletes from Concordia-Moorhead, University of Jamestown, MSU-Moorhead, Northern State, South Dakota School of Mines and NDSU.
 
Freshman Karina Olson handily won the women's 100 meter hurdles, beating second place by more than half a second with her time of 14.90 seconds. That is Olson's top time this season (not wind-aided) and is just 0.3 seconds off the national qualifying standard of 14.60. Olson also placed fourth in the 100 meters in a time of 12.64.
 
Kendra Odegard's throw of 42.00 meters won her the javelin event for the second time this season. She also placed 5^th in shot put (11.94 meters). Sadie Hansen also doubled up with a pair of Top 5 finishes in the throwing events, placing 3^rd in shot put (12.50 meters) and 4^th in javelin (35.64 meters).
 
Lily Baldwin (4^th, 200), Emily Hatlewick (5^th, 800), Olivia Backus (3^rd, long jump), Joran Jundt (5^th, triple jump) and Jade Azure (5^th, discus) also had Top 5 finishes for the Viking women.
 
Jaiden Peraza led the Viking men with a first-place finish in high jump (2.00 meters) and a second-place finish in the long jump (6.94 meters). Cameron Champagnie (3^rd, long jump), Rigo Garcia (4^th, 5000 meters) and Jalen Strickland (5^th, triple jump) also placed Top 5 for the Viking men.
 
Up next: VCSU's Emma Muggli will compete Monday and Tuesday at the NSAA Multi-Event Conference Championship in Madison, S.D. VCSU's team is scheduled to compete at the Bison Open April 19-20 in Fargo.
