JAMESTOWN – The Valley City State softball team dropped a pair of games Friday afternoon at the University of Jamestown Dome.
VCSU fell to host University of Jamestown 14-2 in 5 innings, and then was shut out by NCAA Div. II Northern State University 8-0 in 5 innings. VCSU drops to 1-4 on the season.
The Vikings will play two more games at the Jamestown Dome on Saturday. VCSU plays Mayville State at 4:30 p.m. and rematches Northern State at 6:30 p.m.
Jamestown 14, VCSU 2 (5 innings)
The Jimmies posted six runs in the first inning to build an early lead and finished the game with six more runs in the fifth inning to rout the Vikings by mercy rule, 14-2.
After
Andrea Rodriguez drew a walk,
Logan Gronberg hit a 2-run home run to left-center field to put the Vikings on the board in the bottom of the first inning. VCSU managed six hits in the game including two apiece from Gronberg and
Makenzee Stone, and one hit each from
Sierra Crocker and
Kennadi Stone.
Rhyan Sigmeth got the loss for VCSU after tossing 2/3 innings. She allowed six runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one.
Joelle Lamontagne pitched 4 and 1/3 innings in relief and gave up eight runs on 12 hits while walking two.
Jamestown's Kayla Quintanilla went 3-for-4 at the plate including a home run and a triple. She also scored two runs and drove in three. Gentrey Turin was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Jimmies.
Hope Ransome got the win for Jamestown after pitching all five innings. She allowed two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four.
Northern State 8, VCSU 0 (5 innings)
Northern's Mckenzie Wanner allowed just three hits – all by VCSU freshman
Kennadi Stone – Friday as the Wolves took an 8-0 win over VCSU. She walked just one batter and struck out six in the shutout.
Northern held a 1-0 lead through the first three innings but managed three runs in the fourth to pull away and four more in the fifth to threaten a game decided by mercy rule.
In the bottom of the fifth with two outs,
MacKenzie Rist reached on a hit-by-pitch and
Kennadi Stone doubled, giving the Vikings a chance with two runners in scoring position and a chance to close in on the Wolves.
Andrea Rodriguez struck out swinging, leaving two runners stranded to finish the game.
Maddy Zander got the loss for VCSU after pitching 4 innings. She allowed six runs on six hits, walked six and struck out two.
Logan Gronberg pitched 1 inning in relief and allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
Avarie Eagle and Lexi Chase each finished with two hits for Northern and Eagle drove in four runs for the Wolves.
