VCSU defeats Mayville in Saturday split

JAMESTOWN – The Valley City State softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the Jamestown Dome, including a 4-2 win over Mayville State.
 
The Vikings then dropped a 9-1 game to Northern State in 5 innings decided by mercy rule. The Vikings totaled 14 hits Saturday, including three from Sierra Crocker who finished with a single, double and triple on the day.
 
VCSU is now 2-5 on the season. The Vikings will play four games next Friday and Saturday at the Dordt University Dome.
 
VCSU 4, Mayville 2
Valley City State picked up a 4-2 win over Mayville Saturday, and pitcher Maddy Zander also earned her second win of the season in the pitcher's circle. Zander pitched all 7 innings and allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out two batters in the win.
 
The Vikings found a rally in the second inning as Saige Forseth opened with a double to right center field. Zander singled and Andrea Rodriguez drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Alyssa DePoorter drove in Forseth with a single to open scoring in the game.
 
MacKenzie Rist then reached on a fielder's choice as Zander was forced out at home. Kennadi Stone and Logan Gronberg each added an RBI single, scoring Rodrigez and DePoorter to build a 3-0 lead after the second inning.
 
Leading 3-1 in the fifth inning, Forseth drove in pinch runner Avery Kuklinski to expand the Viking lead. Mayville added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but the teams would remain scoreless in the final two innings.
 
VCSU totaled 10 hits in the game led by two hits apiece by Forseth, Zander and Sierra Crocker. Forseth and Crocker each doubled, while Forseth, DePoorter, Kennadi Stone and Logan Gronberg each drove in a run.
 
Mayville finished with four hits in the game including a double by Erika Howell. Megan Elliott and Lindsey Tulla each collected a hit and an RBI for the Comets. Emily Haines got the loss after pitching 5 innings. She allowed four runs on eight hits and walked three.
 
Northern State 9, VCSU 1 (5 innings)
The Vikings then dropped the second game of the day in a rematch against Northern State, who also defeated VCSU on Friday.
 
VCSU's Sierra Crocker tripled to lead off the second inning. Andrea Rodriguez later drove her in with a two-out single to centerfield to build a 1-0 lead.
 
Northern responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning including an RBI double from Madi Jones. Northern added four more runs in the third and three runs in the fifth, all unearned.
 
Rodriguez finished with two hits, and Gronberg and Crocker each added one for VCSU. Gronberg got the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs and four unearned runs. Rhyan Sigmeth and Joelle Lamontagne each made an appearance in relief.
 
Taylor Coleman earned the win for Northern after pitching all 5 innings. She allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out six. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, scored three runs and drove in two. Elly Smith added three hits, two doubles and two RBIs for the Wolves.
