The Valley City State baseball team had its highest offensive output of the fall season Wednesday night, but it wasn't quite enough as the Vikings fell 11-7 at the University of Jamestown.
Â
Jamestown scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Vikings were never able to overcome the early deficit. Trailing 9-1 after three innings, VCSU was able to trim the deficit to 9-5 and 10-7 but could not complete the comeback.
Â
Jaden Babiuk went 3-for-5 at the plate, highlighting VCSU's 10-hit night. Seven other Vikings all had one hit each.
Zach Veneman hit a 3-run home run in the fourth inning for VCSU, and
Cam Pero had a solo shot in the eighth.
Â
Viking starter
Kahlil Tilbury took the loss on the mound after Jamestown's early five-run inning.
Takao Cookson,
Jay Mendez and
Connor Nelson all pitched in relief. Mendez gave the Vikings 4 1/3 solid innings, scattering six hits and two runs as VCSUÂ worked to trim the deficit in the middle innings.
Â
Up next: Valley City State (2-2) will rematch with Jamestown on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Valley City. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at VCSU's Charlie Brown Field.
