Vikings take 2 from Waldorf on Senior Day

VALLEY CITY – The VCSU softball finished its home opener and Senior Day with a pair of wins over Waldorf, tallying 24 runs in just 10 innings on the day.
 
VCSU recognized its three graduating seniors – Ashlynne Copinga, Marissa Hawkins, and Riley Perryman – following the sweep.
 
Perryman and Ashlyn Diemert each went 6-for-6 on the day and combined for four doubles, eight runs and nine RBI for the Vikings.
 
VCSU improves to 20-19 on the season and 13-5 in the North Star. Waldorf drops to 13-25 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
 
UP NEXT: VCSU hosts Mayville State on Tuesday on the football turf. First pitch of the NSAA doubleheader is at 2 p.m.
 
VCSU 9, Waldorf 0 (5 innings)
VCSU's Joelle Lamontagne tossed a complete game shutout of the Warriors in game one, racking up eight strikeouts and allowing just four hits in the win.
 
The Viking offense took care of the rest, taking a 5-0 lead after the first inning with the help of RBI doubles from Riley Perryman and Ashlyn Diemert as well as a 2-run homer by Sierra Crocker.
 
Ashlynne Copinga and Saige Forseth each added a solo home run for VCSU. Copinga has now homered in three of the last four games.
 
Diemert went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles in the game while Perryman and Forseth each went 2-for-2. Perryman and Alyssa DePoorter added a double apiece, and Crocker and Forseth each drove in a pair of runs.
 
McKenna Mentink got the loss for Waldorf after starting in the circle. She allowed eight runs on six hits while walking two. Alyssa Oswald pitched 3 innings in relief and allowed one run on four hits and walked two.
 
VCSU 15, Waldorf 6 (5 innings)
The Vikings finished the sweep of Waldorf with a 15-6 victory in five innings, highlighted by a 10-run second inning that included a Maddy Zander grand slam.
 
Waldorf held a 3-2 lead after the first inning but the Vikings rallied with 10 runs on seven hits in the second inning to command a 12-3 lead. Diemert and Perryman each drove in runs with RBI singles, and Marissa Hawkins drove in a pair of runs on a double to center field.
 
Alyssa DePoorter walked and Makenzee Stone reached on a fielding error to load the bases for a Maddy Zander grand slam – just her third home run in a Viking uniform. Perryman added another RBI single to round out scoring in the big inning.
 
Diemert went 3-for-3 while scoring two runs and driving in three. Perryman was 4-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in four.

Zander got the win in the circle after working 2 and 2/3 innings. She allowed five runs on five hits while walking eight and striking out two. Brooke Gaudry pitched in relief and allowed just one run on two hits, walked two and struck out two.
 
Alex Mathers got the loss for Waldorf after allowing eight runs on eight hits while walking two. Maddie Dalke and Paige Pierson each made an appearance in relief.
 
Allie Funderburk went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Warriors.
