VALLEY CITY – Four different Vikings homered Tuesday as the Valley City State softball team split its doubleheader against Mayville State.
Alyssa DePoorter and
Sierra Crocker each homered in a 15-7 victory decided in six innings.
Riley Perryman and
Maddy Zander each added a solo shot as the Vikings fell 8-4 to the Comets.
VCSU moves to 21-20 on the season and 15-6 in conference play. Mayville improves to 7-25 on the season and 6-18 in the North Star.
UP NEXT: VCSU concludes its conference schedule with a 4-game series at Dakota State April 29-30. Saturday's games are slated for 2 and 4 p.m. in Madison, S.D.
Mayville rounds out the regular season at conference-leader Bellevue on Saturday and Sunday.
VCSU 15, Mayville 7 (6 innings)
The Vikings posted eight runs in the first inning to take the lead and never look back.
Marissa Hawkins and
Sierra Crocker each recorded an RBI single in the inning, and
Andrea Rodriguez added a 2-run double to help the offensive effort.
Marissa Hawkins totaled eight strikeouts Tuesday.
Crocker added a solo home run in the second inning, and DePoorter chipped in a 3-run shot in the fifth. Leading 13-7 in the sixth,
Ashlyn Diemert doubled to score
Ashlynne Copinga, and
Riley Perryman ended the game by run rule on a ground-rule double to score Diemert.
DePoorter went 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring two runs and driving in four. Crocker, Hawkins and Perryman each added two hits while Crocker, Diemert and Rodriguez each drove in two runs.
Maddy Zander got the win in the circle, pitching 3 innings in relief. She did not allow a single run and walked just one batter. She allowed three hits while striking out three. Lamontagne started in the circle and allowed seven runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out four.
Miquela Pino and Alyssa Avila each totaled three hits for the Comets while Mackenzie Hughes and Brooke Roeges added a 2-run home run apiece. Hughes finished the game with three RBI.
Aimee Fafard got the loss after starting in the circle. She allowed six runs on three hits while walking one. Sidney Fairbanks pitched 5 and 2/3 innings in relief and allowed nine runs on nine hits while walking five and striking out one.
Mayville 8, VCSU 4
The Vikings scattered seven hits and scored a run in four different innings but could not find a rally as Mayville took the 8-4 victory in game two.
Mayville scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Avila's 2-run single. The Comets added three more runs in the third and one more in the fourth to hold an 8-2 advantage.
Riley Perryman hit a two-out solo home run in the third inning, and
Maddy Zander added a solo shot in the fourth.
Trailing 8-3 and looking for a seventh-inning rally, the Vikings put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Diemert scored Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly, but that's all the Vikings could bring home in the 8-4 loss.
Copinga was the only Viking to collect multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 at the plate and scoring a run for VCSU. Zander and Perryman each homered, and Rodrigez scored VSCU's final run in the game.
Zander started in the circle and got the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out one.
Joelle Lamontagne pitched 1 and 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits, and
Marissa Hawkins worked 4 and 1/3 innings while allowing just two hits and striking out eight batters.
Mayville's Courtney Boll got the complete game win, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out six. Roeges led Mayville at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Avila and Erika Howell each drove in a pair of runs and Sam Shumway scored twice.
