Vikings down Comets in Tuesday doubleheader

CASSELTON, N.D. – The Valley City State softball team swept Mayville State Tuesday in a pair of NSAA contests by final scores of 12-9 and 7-2.
 
Ashlynne Copinga homered twice on the day, and Riley Perryman added a home run that marks the 30th of her career. Perryman is the first player to reach 30 home runs in the Viking uniform.
 
VCSU improves to 18-19 on the season and 12-5 in conference play. Mayville State drops to 4-22 overall and 3-14 in the North Star.
 
The Vikings are tentatively scheduled to host Waldorf on Saturday and Sunday in Valley City, pending the weekend forecast.

Valley City State took a comeback victory over Mayville State with the help a five-run sixth inning.
 
The Comets led the Vikings 9-7 after five complete innings when Copinga kicked off scoring in the sixth, swiping the plate on a passed ball to trail by just a run. With two outs, Makenzee Stone hit an RBI single to right field followed by a 2-run double by Alyssa DePoorter to take the 10-9 advantage.

Saige Forseth scored DePoorter with an infield single to round out scoring in the sixth and added another run on Sierra Crocker's RBI single in the seventh.
 
VCSU totaled 16 hits in the game, led by Perryman who was 3-for-4 while scoring two runs and driving in two. Copinga, Stone, Forseth, DePoorter, Crocker and Ashlyn Diemert each chipped in two hits for the Vikings. Copinga and Perryman homered, and DePoorter doubled twice.
 
Maddy Zander got the win for VCSU while pitching 4 and 1/3 innings. She allowed just a run on four hits while walking one and striking out three. Brooke Gaudry started in the circle and pitched 2 and 2/3 innings.
 
Mayville's Sidney Fairbanks got the loss after 5 and 2/3 innings of work. She allowed 11 runs on 13 hits while walking four and striking out two.
 
Mackenzie Hughes and Miquela Pino each had three hits, and Brooke Roeges drove in three runs for the Comets.
 
 
VCSU 7, Mayville 2
Sierra Crocker's double in the first inning scored two runs that allowed VCSU to take a lead it wouldn't give up en route to a 7-2 win.
 
The Vikings added runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings as a part of the balanced team effort that totaled 13 hits in the game.
 
Copinga went 3-for-4 with another solo home run and finished with two runs and an RBI. Crocker added two hits including a double, and DePoorter doubled twice. Crocker and Perryman drove in a pair of runs apiece.
 
Joelle Lamontagne pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs on nine hits. She walked one and struck out seven batters.
 
Courtney Boll worked all 7 innings for Mayville and got the loss in the circle. She allowed seven runs on 13 hits, did not walk a single batter and struck out two.
 
Desiree Lawrence drove in both of Mayville's runs on a 2-run double and finished with two hits in the game. Isis Johnson and Erika Howell each added two hits for the Comets.
