FOREST CITY, IOWA – Valley City State's defense forced 20 turnovers and held Waldorf to just 31 percent shooting Friday night as the Vikings battled their way to a low-scoring road victory.
VCSU led 23-19 after the first half and used a 15-2 run midway through the second half to take control of their 58-49 win at Waldorf University.
It is VCSU's fifth win in the last six games as the Vikings improved their record to 13-11 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The Vikings are now tied with Dickinson State and Bellevue for third place in the NSAA standings. VCSU travels to Viterbo University on Saturday. The V-Hawks are currently 7-3 in conference play and in second place in the NSAA standings.
Daevonte Munson posted his second straight double-double for the Vikings on Friday, finishing with team highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cayden Rickard continued his torrid 3-point shooting with another three 3's and 13 points. Joseph Owens scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench. Tate Hebrink added seven points and a team-high five assists.
VCSU's defense had 16 steals, including three each by Hunter Lyman, Edmon Paul Oyet, Rickard and Munson. Lyman added seven rebounds.
The Vikings shot 39 percent overall (25-65), 31 percent on 3's (5-16) and went 3-for-8 on free throws. Waldorf shot just 31 percent overall (21-68), 5 percent on 3's (2-37) and 45 percent on free throws (5-11).
Waldorf took a 30-28 lead about 4 minutes into the second half, but the Vikings responded with a 15-2 run over the next six minutes. Five straight points by Rickard capped the run and gave VCSU a 43-32 lead with 9:23 remaining. Waldorf would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
