VCSU women take comeback victory over MSU-Northern

HAVRE, MONT. – Valley City State's Rosie Anderson scored the go-ahead basket on a putback layup with 3 seconds remaining to defeat Montana State University-Northern 68-67 Sunday on the road.
 
VCSU erased a 38-33 halftime deficit to take the comeback win and improve to 6-6 on the season. MSU-Northern drops to 3-4 overall.
 
Montana State-Northern led by as much as 10 points late in the second quarter Sunday, but VCSU started its comeback straight out of the locker room with a 3-pointer from Ashlyn Diemert. The Vikings led by as much as four points on a 3 from Delaney Cotton halfway through the third quarter and held a 54-54 tie at the end of the frame.
 
Neither team led by more than three points in the fourth quarter Sunday. MSU-Northern held a 67-66 lead on a layup by Savannah Toms with 14 seconds to go. After a Skylight foul with 6 seconds on the clock, Ellie Braaten missed a layup on the in-bound, but Anderson grabbed the rebound and scored on the putback to defeat the Skylights.
 
The Vikings shot a season-high 44 percent on field goals Sunday (26-59), 46 percent on 3-pointers (12-26) and 40 percent on free throws (4-10). MSUN shot 49 percent from the field (24-49), 41 percent on 3's (7-17) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (12-16). The Vikings also led the Skylights in points off turnovers (16-9) and second chance points (11-7).

Hailey Roberts led all scorers with 23 points while Adriana Torres chipped in a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ashlyn Diemert finished with 12 points to round out Vikings scoring in double figures. Ellie Braaten dished a team-high five assists and Torres tallied four steals in the game.
 
Savannah Toms led MSU-Northern with 16 points and eight rebounds Sunday.
