VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to non-conference opponent Morningside on Sunday afternoon, 25-18, 26-24 and 25-17.
The Vikings fall to a 5-12 overall record and hold a 2-1 record in the NSAA. Morningside improves to a 10-11 record overall and hold a 1-5 record in the GPAC.
Sadie Hansen had a solid all-around performance Sunday, finishing with 24 set assists, 11 digs, five kills and a pair of service aces for the Vikings.
Bailey Nelson totaled a team-high 11 kills Sunday while Kallene Klever added a team-high 14 digs and Katie Juarez chipped in 10 digs. Caitlyn Fischbach tallied three assisted blocks Sunday and freshman Lexi Leroux contributed four service aces for VCSU.
The Mustangs, who were coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 2 University of Jamestown Saturday, opened up Sunday's match with a 22-13 advantage over the Vikings after taking an 8-3 run. A Caitlyn Fischbach kill sparked a 5-1 Viking run but could get no closer as Morningside won the first set, 25-18.
Morningside started set two with a 13-6 lead when the Vikings started to close the gap and took the next six straight points, including a pair of blocks from Fischbach and Brooke Blessum. Trailing 19-16, a Makayla Wetzel kill sent the Vikings on a six-point rally to lead 22-20. From there, Morningside finished the set with a 7-2 run to take the set two, 26-24.
The Mustangs then took set four after hitting .425 as a team and tallying 18 kills en route to a 25-17 victory.
Morningside's Sydney Marlow totaled 13 kills on a .480 hitting percentage while Meredith Hoffman and Emerson Smith each tallied 11 kills for the Mustangs. Payton Shoquist led the Mustangs with 18 digs and Smith added 17 digs.
UP NEXT: Valley City State is on the road next weekend for a pair of conference matches. The Vikings travel to No. 11 Bellevue University on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. The Vikings then face Dakota State on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m.
