VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State volleyball team took one set from No. 3 Viterbo Saturday but ultimately dropped its home match against the nationally-ranked V-Hawks, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-8.
Valley City State drops to 5-11 overall and 2-1 in the NSAA. Viterbo improves to 21-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.
After dropping set one 25-13, the Vikings handed Viterbo a 25-23 loss in set two. Saturday's second-set loss to VCSU is only Viterbo's ninth lost set of the season out of 73 sets played.
The Vikings opened set two with an 11-4 advantage, capped by a solo block by Makayla Wetzel. The V-Hawks then answered with a 10-point rally. Trailing 18-14, a kill from Sadie Hansen sent the Vikings on an eight-point run to lead 21-18. Viterbo would tie the set at 22-all, but VCSU came out on top with a 25-23 win on a kill from Katie Juarez.
Valley City State kept the third set close but at a 19-19 tie, Viterbo finished with a 6-1 run to take the 25-20 victory in set three. The Vikings couldn't regain their momentum as they dropped the final set 25-8.
Katie Juarez finished Saturday's game with 10 kills and nine digs while Bailey Nelson contributed nine kills for VCSU. Kallene Klever added a team-high 18 digs Saturday.
Sadie Hansen tallied 27 set assists, eight digs and three blocks Saturday. Makayla Wetzel totaled a team-high five blocks while Brooke Blessum tallied four and Caitlyn Fischbach added three.
Viterbo totaled 15 blocks (2 solo, 13 assisted) in the game Saturday, led by Miah Garant who tallied 10 assisted blocks. She also finished with a team-high 15 kills while Maya Roberts added 10 kills for the V-Hawks.
Abbey Johnson totaled 21 set assists and Lauryn Sobasky tallied 18 assists and a pair of service aces for Viterbo. Adrianna Reinhart finished with 23 digs.
UP NEXT: Valley City State hosts Morningside for a non-conference match on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Graichen Gym.
