Four Vikings post double figures in victory over Saints

VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State women's basketball team had four players score in double figures Friday, defeating Presentation College 62-45.

Macey Kvilvang recorded a double double in the victory, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds Friday. Maara Nelson poured in a game-high 16 points, while Taryn Dieterle scored 12 and Adriana Torres added 11. Nelson also dished out three assists for the Vikings.

Valley City State improves to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the North Star. Presentation falls to 1-18 overall and 0-8 in the NSAA.

The first quarter featured three lead changes until the Vikings took a 9-2 run, including six Maara Nelson free throws, to close out the first quarter with a 15-11 lead. The Vikings narrowly outscored the Saints in the second quarter as Valley City State held a 31-26 advantage at halftime.

Valley City State took off coming out of the locker room, opening the second half with a 12-4 rally capped by a layup from Taryn Dieterle to lead by 13. The Vikings held onto a double figure lead until the fourth quarter when the Saints took a 8-0 run with 4:20 to go, closing the gap to just six points at 51-45. It was all Valley City State from there as three-pointers from Adriana Torres (2) and Dieterle put it away for the Vikings, 62-45.

The Vikings shot 39 percent from the field (22-57), 25 percent on three-pointers (5-20), and 68 percent on free throws (13-19). The Saints shot 33 percent from the field (19-58), 21 percent from beyond the arc (3-14), and 67 percent from the free throw line. Valley City State also tallied 11 assists and six steals as a team. 

Presentation was led by Tone Oglesby and Justice Crooks who each scored 10 points for the Saints.

UP NEXT: Valley City State hosts Mayville State for a doubleheader on Saturday. Women will tip at 3 p.m. with the men to follow at 5 p.m. Presentation travels to Dickinson State Saturday.
