VCSU women score early and often in win over Crown

VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – Valley City State scored 45 first-half points Saturday afternoon as the Viking women's basketball team rolled to a 85-23 victory over Crown College.

VCSU outscored Crown 23-3 in the first quarter and held a 45-8 lead at halftime. All 12 Vikings who played in the game scored at least two points.

The Vikings improve to 4-0 on the season. VCSU plays an exhibition game at NDSU on Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday's game was an exhibition contest for Crown College, an NCAA Division III school from Minnesota.

Valley City State was led by 14 points off the bench from freshman center Maddie Fenske, who also had a team-high eight rebounds. Kate Williams and Hannah Schlecht both scored 10 points and three other Vikings had at least eight points.

VCSU shot 49 percent overall (33-68), 36 percent from 3-point range (10-28) and 69 percent on free throws (9-13). The Vikings forced 30 Crown turnovers and recorded 17 steals. Four different Vikings had three steals each. VCSU had 16 assists, including three each by Alli Vandal, Paige Meyer and Hannah Schlecht.

Crown College shot just 15 percent from the field (7-48), went 0-for-11 on 3's and 9-for-16 on free throws. Kayla Carter led Crown with 10 points.

Up next: Valley City State (4-0) travels to North Dakota State University for an exhibition game Sunday at 2 p.m.
