The Valley City State women's basketball team opened the second quarter with a 19-2 run Saturday night as the Vikings rolled to a 70-43 victory over Presentation College in the regular season finale.
The Vikings led 16-13 after the first quarter, but outscored the Saints 23-6 in the second quarter to open up a commanding 39-19 halftime lead. VCSU went on to lead by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter en route to the big home victory.
VCSU ends the regular season at 17-9 overall and 10-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. The Vikings are in a virtual tie with Dickinson State (21-7, 9-3 NSAA) for the second spot in the NSAA standings. Postseason pairings will be announced on Sunday, and the Vikings will either be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed.
Presentation College drops to 6-19 overall and 3-10 in the NSAA. The Saints should be the No. 6 seed for the postseason.
The Women's NSAA Conference Tournament begins Wednesday night. All games will be played at the higher seed in the contest.
Three different Vikings scored in double figures Saturday night, led by 17 from Lexi Lennon and 15 by Georgia Williams. Courtney Dixon – who was honored along with Tracie Boehmlehner for VCSU's Senior Night – added 10 points for the Vikings. Eleven different Vikings scored in the game.
VCSU shot 44 percent from the field (25-57), 27 percent on 3's (4-15) and 84 percent at the free throw line (16-19). The Vikings committed just 10 turnovers and had 10 assists and 10 steals.
Sydney Larson had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Saints. Cora Lopez had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Saints shot 32 percent from the field (17-53), 13 percent on 3's (2-16) and was 7-for-8 at the free throw line. The Saints committed 20 turnovers and had eight assists.
Up next: Valley City State and Presentation College will both play Wednesday night in the first round of the NSAA Tournament. VCSU will be at home and Presentation will be on the road. Pairings will be announced Sunday.
