Turnovers hampered the Valley City State University football team on Saturday as the Vikings lost a 28-7 contest at Dickinson State University.
The No. 15-ranked Vikings committed six turnovers in the game as they fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Dickinson State improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the North Star Athletic Association.
The teams were scoreless through one quarter, and Dickinson State held a 7-0 lead at halftime. But the Blue Hawks took a commanding 21-0 lead midway through the third quarter. The Vikings finally got on the board late in the third quarter with a three-yard touchdown run from Colby Lum that capped a seven-play, 62-yard drive.
The Blue Hawks answered with a long touchdown drive of their own to re-establish a 28-7 lead they would hold the rest of the way.
Valley City State University gained 153 yards on the ground, but struggled to move the ball through the air. Viking quarterbacks Kurtis Walls and Josh Hansana combined for nine completions, 70 yards passing and five interceptions in the loss.
Dickinson State gained 177 yards through the air and 314 yards on the ground. Tray Boone led the Blue Hawks with 205 yards rushing and a touchdown on 34 carries.
