The Valley City State women's basketball team completed a 2-0 road trip to Montana with a 68-64 victory over Montana-Western on Wednesday.
The Vikings shot 56 percent in the second half and held off a late rally by Montana-Western on the final day of the Hampton Inn Classic in Billings, Mont. Wednesday's victory follows a 64-62 win over Rocky Mountain College on Tuesday.
Valley City State is now 9-5 overall and has won five straight games. The victory is head coach Jill DeVries' 250th career win at VCSU. The Vikings will be back in action Jan. 8-9 with two games at the Johnson & Wales Classic in Denver, Colo.
Three different Vikings scored in double figures Wednesday against Montana-Western. VCSU was led by 19 points from Georgia Williams, who was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers. As a team, VCSU made 10 of 17 3-point attempts. Sara Schwanke and Hannah Schlecht both knocked down a pair of 3's.
Courtney Dixon posted a near double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Mackenzie Huber had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Vikings shot 47 percent for the game (26-55), which helped them overcome 19 turnovers. Montana-Western committed just eight turnovers, but was limited to just 36 percent shooting.
Leading 47-44 entering the fourth quarter, the Vikings opened the final period with seven straight points to open up a 54-44 lead. A basket by Dixon gave the Vikings their biggest lead of the game at 62-51 with three minutes to go. Montana-Western mounted a 10-0 run to get back within 62-61, but the Vikings made six out of eight free throws in the final minute – their only free throws of the game – to seal the victory.
